Album Review

Vulgar comedian Doug Stanhope's debut for Nebraskan label -ismist Recordings features 15 skits that center mostly on perversity. Occasionally, such as during "Ecstasy," he ventures into drug territory, but he still manages to integrate some sort of sexual humor for the punch line. His humor isn't easy to stomach, and will surely offend many, but if you enjoy rude and exploitative sex jokes coming from a p***s-orientated male point of view, this should make you laugh.

Don't discount the intelligence behind Stanhope's work

The iTunes intro to this is highly unfair and sounds like it was written by someone who shouldn't listen to his work. Yes, he uses all the words in the dictionary, and yes, he might be offensive to some, but Stanhope really thinks about his work and material. As Stanhope says, "I don't do the kind of jokes you're expecting: "Don't we hate shopping for the tampons for the ladies, guys?". I'm not that guy." Though-provoking, internally coherent, and--yes--shocking at times, Stanhope is proof that life is funnier than fiction. "Sicko" is a good starter album to see if you like his work: Try the track "Mom". If you laugh yourself silly, get the album.

OK...maybe not 5 stars, but only because I've heard them all

Doug Stanhope is funny, vulgar, and maybe even charasmatic. This is his first cd of currenly four but you can see his newer "topical" material on youtube.com and that is good too. Doug truly got a bad rap with the man show and girlsgonewild. I didn't realize he was selected to take on those roles because of his standup routines. One recurring thing with Stanhope is that all of his opening bits are killer. Buy all of his albums, but if you want a sample of his depth, get the intro tracks from "Die Laughing" and "Something to Take the Edge Off." Otherwise, listen sequentially because he never gets lees offensive.

"Brutal" is an adjective usually reserved for death metal bands and horror movies, but thanks to the bitter, trashy, and very funny Doug Stanhope, it's a descriptor found stickered across CDs and DVDs in the comedy section. Born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, Stanhope originally moved to L.A. for his big break, but his career didn't take off until he gave up on California and moved to Las Vegas in 1990. In 1997, he was selling his ACID Bootleg album at shows, then a year later he released...
