where to next?
This is one tough band (and album) to pigeonhole. But 5 stars? No way, but there are some good tracks here. At times, they sound a bit like early Was (Not Was), at times like Dr. John, and I can hear other funk/groove influences, such as Les Claypool here, too. Plus some experimentation and torch ballads, and you can see why it's so hard to say exactly what they sound like. Swampadelica is all over the map, and this album might have you wondering what direction they're going in. A good track to start with is "Ganesh," which gets some fair air play on Sirius' 'jam on' channel. If the rest of the album stuck with Ganesh's groove, it would rate 4 stars, but so much of this outing seems directionless and meandering. At least the vocals have improved over their first album. Here's hoping they find what direction they want to go in, as they show some definite potential.
Surprise Surprise
I wasn't expecting Swampadelica to sound like this, but I was pleasantly surprised. With a name like Swampadelica one might expect, well, swampy music, in a Cajun style. But this band is more like a 70's deep cut. Hip Hop, funk, rock grooves and oddly enough, good balladeers. A weird mix that is hard to describe, but really tasty.
