time well spent
Maida Vale has taken some time between this full length and their last one. It's rather obvious that in that time, they were able to hone their craft.
The production has improved (that bass is so much more than an anchor, and the drum sound rings clear and true), and there's a sense that the band may have actually recorded these songs together. It's cohesive.
Is Your Heart Blue? is the instant standout track for me. I imagine this song being slowed down to utter perfection at live shows. On the recording, Eric Case's vocals sound the most truthful to date, and the subtle, shimmering slide is unnoticeably crucial in causing the introspection I experience listening to this song. Is my heart blue? It may be.
It's strange to already be looking ahead to future releases, but the last track is what I hope for in the future of Maida Vale. Walk Resurrection sounds like a perfectly captured live track recorded at the end of an honest night of sweat and pouring out. In fact, everything I like about Signs of Life is in this song: It's gritty, it's simple and it showcases what this band is capable of accomplishing when they focus on the art of songwriting and collaboration with defined roles.
