Album Review
You never quite know what style of guitar playing is going to greet you when you put on a new Paul Gilbert disc, as he's tackled blues, pop, and acoustic pieces in the past. But on his 2008 release, Silence Followed by a Deafening Roar, Gilbert focuses on what made him such a renowned player among guitar shredders worldwide in the first place, as he totally focuses on his soloing and riffing capabilities (and goes "all instrumental," to boot). It may be 2008, but such tunes as the album-opening title track and "Eudaimonia Overture" could have easily come out in 1988, and probably would have caught the attention of every Guitar for the Practicing Musician subscriber at the time. And there are even a few tranquil moments ("Bronx 1971") and oddities (the piano-led "The Gargoyle") thrown in for good measure. Paul Gilbert remains one of rock guitar's top gymnasts, as evidenced throughout Silence Followed by a Deafening Roar.

YOU HAD IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!
Oh Paul....you had it right the first time (re: GET OUT OF MY YARD!). I remember reading various interviews with Paul before he made Get Out of My Yard, where he was asking Joe Satriani and others advice on how to go about finding your own sound and how to create captivating instrumental songs vs songs with lyrics. I believe Paul found his true sound as an instrumental artist on Get Out of My Yard. His playing and songwriting are absolutely stellar, original, and mindblowing on that album---plus, it showcases his impeccable sense of humor. This album sounds forced...like he was trying to reinvent himself all over again...however, I find that the ultra fast shredding--while really fun to watch live or on DVD--on this album gets in the way of the songs. Paul's not only technically impeccable, his songs (as stated above) are fun and interesting and catchy. But, as he himself states on the Get Out of My Yard instructional DVD---he feels like he needs to prove that he can still shred. Well, I think every die-hard Gilbert fan, such as myself, knows that already. He doesn't need to prove it to anyone! We know he's the king of shred. I expected more from this album. I'm not so in love with the Marshall sound--we hear it on virtually every Paul Gilbert wannabe's records. I believe he should have stuck with the Laney/ Electroharmonix set-up. Don't get me wrong--I'm not dissing Paul in any way. I have the upmost respect for him, and with 30 years of playing guitar under my (female) belt, I am STILL reaching new technically proficient boundaries by watching and listening Paul. I suppose I want the less serious, humorous, no-holds-bar Paul that I found on Get Out of My Yard. This album sounds like it's trying to reinvent that album with several new sounds (he has Satch's sound on several songs--which is okay for Satch...) and different equipment. I still gave the album four stars, but I would suggest GET OUT OF MY YARD to his die-hard fans and to new fans alike. And yes, it's about time Paul's incredible work is available on itunes! :)
...And justice for Paul
Thank you iTunes for finally recognizing one of rock's greatest guitar heroes. This album is definitely amazing! If you like this one, consider it a sequel to his first instrumental album "Get Out of My Yard", another killer CD. iTunes might as well put out his entire catalog, 'cause it's so damn good!
