A Solid Effort
Éowyn, like all female rock artists, is destined to be compared to Amy Lee at one point or another. That being said, she has more in common with European rock acts Within Temptation and Nightwish than she does with Evanescence. She has a lot to learn, but this record shows promise. 1. Crashing – Opening with an ethereal, ghost-like sound effect, Crashing soon launches into the face-melting rock befitting an opening track. A solid song, even though the guitars are seriously toned down during the verses, which is a shame since they’re the best thing this song has going for it. Just as the chorus gets you going, the next verse stops you dead. This song could have been better, but it’s still a great track. ☆☆☆☆ 2. Life – This song is, in my opinion, the strongest cut here. The drums are infectious, and the guttural guitars sound like a caged beast trying to get out. Unlike Crashing, when the guitars pause for Éowyn to sing, you can almost hear the guitar growling in the background, ready to roar again. Her voice also seems better suited to this song than Crashing. Gothic rock fans, this is a must-download. ☆☆☆☆☆ 3. To My Surprise – This song sounds like it’s going to make the same mistake as Crashing, but the saving grace of this song is Éowyn’s vocal performance. She puts enough passion and feeling into the words to make you want fall to your knees and scream them with her. “To my surprise/You heard my cry/Lord Jesus, rescue me!” ☆☆☆☆☆ 4. Silent Screams – A good song is combination of singing, writing, and musical performance. This song has all three, including a guest vocal contribution by Pillar lead singer, Rob Beckley. Rob’s signature vocals really add a lot to this song. This CD could have benefited from his talents in a few other places. ☆☆☆☆ 5. Runaway – This song doesn’t distinguish itself from the rest, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s just as solid as the rest of the album. At just 2:50 long, you could easily hear the whole thing and not realize “Silent Screams” was over, if you’re not paying attention. ☆☆☆☆ 6. Unfinished Memories – Just when you start tiring of the in-your-face rock, Éowyn sings a haunting ballad that is truly one of the album’s brightest spots. Truth be told, her voice lends itself to songs like this much more readily than to power rock, and one wonders if she missed her calling. That’s not to say her voice doesn’t fit the heavier songs, it’s just that she does this one SO well. This album could have used one or two more of these. ☆☆☆☆☆ 7. Hands of Time – This song starts off with a lot of potential. A very techno-ish beat kicks off, and it sounds very influenced by Skillet’s “Invincible” era. The whole song, I was waiting for some growling guitars to kick in over the sick instrumentation. Alas, they never did. Don’t get me wrong, it sounds great, but it also sounds like this could have been so much better with some distorted riffs over the beat. I gave this song 3 stars because it really doesn’t fit the rest of the CD at all… It’s a decent song, but it just feels like it’s out of place. ☆☆☆ 8. Significant – This song can’t seem to decide whether it wants to be a ballad or a rock song. It actually pulls off the dual act, though, and becomes a solid addition to the album. ☆☆☆☆ 9. Saving Grace – A rock anthem with a slower tempo than the rest of the CD, this one comes off being rather epic. The slower tempo works rather well, as her vocals seem more at home. As with most of the rest of the album, it lacks that special SOMEthing to push it from ‘good song’ to ‘great song’, but you won’t regret buying this one. ☆☆☆☆ 10. Goodbye – This one is a fitting closer to an overall great album. The guitars here probably make for a great song to perform live. Nothing else really to say about it… it’s just a solid rock track with another great vocal performance from Éowyn. ☆☆☆☆ Overall, this is a pretty good effort for a 3rd (I think) album. Éowyn could use some polish, but I say she’s got a pretty bright future ahead of her in the music scene. This album doesn’t compare to Evanescence’s Fallen, but not many do. The main strengths here are Éowyn’s haunting vocals, and the guitar playing, some of which was done by Noah from Pillar. The songwriting could use some work, but it’s hard to put that into words. Listen to “Runaway”, then go listen to Breaking Benjamin’s “Breath” to see what I mean. This album will make a great addition to your library, regardless, however. Éowyn deserves a lot more recognition than she currently has been getting. I look forward to hearing more from her. Overall score: ☆☆☆☆ Must Download: Life, Unfinished Memories Should Download: To My Surprise, Silent Screams, Saving Grace, Goodbye

EO-WOW
I never thought Christian Rock was the thing for me, But Eowyn is a whole new definition of the term. I saw them live last night in Green Bay, and it was the greatest night in a long time. This band has a unique balence of powerful vocals and and catchy guitar, plus so much energy. They're also so kind to their fans and care about each and every one of them. Overall I was very impressed with their music.
