Album Review

By the early 21st century, hardcore metal seemed to have been pushed way past its limit — how many different ways can you scream your head off and have a guitarist stomping around while bashing brutal riffs out of his instrument? Well, one different 'avenue' you can take is by injecting hardcore with a semi-glossy production sheen, which is a fitting description of the third full-length overall by Tucson's the Bled, 2007's Silent Treatment. It's understandable to pass judgment upon hearing such ditties as the album opening "Shadetree Mechanics" — it appears as though the group is a tried and true hardcore outfit. But dig a bit deeper, and you discover that the chaps have a few surprise detours up their sleeves, especially the overtly melodic — for them, anyway — "Asleep on the Frontlines," as well as tracks that merge hardcore verses with emo melodic chorus, such as "Platonic Sleepover Massacre" and "The Silver Lining." Rarely have both underground and mainstream sounds collided as fiercely as they do on Silent Treatment.

Customer Reviews

A fan through and through.

The new album is great, and how come I hear no mention of my personal favorite “Silver Lining.” The song rocks your nugget pouch until it hurts; also it contains, arguably the best break down of the album. Give credit when credit is due “Silent Treatment” still possess the vicious sounds of “Pass The Flask”, and the equally astonishing sensations of “Found In The Flood.” A true fan of The Bled will be satisfied with the new album. It is a phenomenal compilation of the two previous records recommended to anyone who is willing to listen.

A Step in the Right Direction

This is a good follow-up to Found in the Flood which was a bit of letdown after their debut album Pass the Flask. This album is very heavy, but starting with 'Threes Away' there are two great melodic songs back-to-back. Silent Treatment may not live up to the standards set by Pass the Flask, but it is a solid album.

Still killing after all these years

The Bled come through with another amazing album, incorportaing the best parts of Pass the Flash and Found in the Flood. This is a must buy if you like heavy music with brains.

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Inspired by groups like Refused and the Mars Volta, Tucson-based post-hardcore quintet the Bled burst onto the national scene with their 2005 Vagrant debut, Found in the Flood. By that point the band's lineup featured vocalist James Muñoz, guitarists Ross Ott and Jeremy Talley, and a rhythm section of Darren Simoes (bass) and Mike Pedicone (drums), though like most bands they'd endured some lineup changes in the past. Previous to the Vagrant deal, the Bled had been on Fiddler, where they issued the...
