Album Review

Who says you can't ever find your way home again? Finland's Amorphis started testing the veracity of that age-old maxim in 2005, when their Eclipse album interrupted years of ruthless genre-hopping evolution, took stock of a bevy of styles from all eras of the group's long career, and stewed them into a single, mostly satisfying mélange. Amorphis' peacemaking experiment with their past also coincided with the introduction of new vocalist Tomi Joutsen, leading some to speculate that the departed Pasi Koskinen had much to do with their prior direction, and perhaps proving the point when their subsequent outing, 2007's Silent Waters, found the band pursuing the all-inclusive philosophy once again. And so, on the one hand, listeners can get their death metal fix from guitarist (and original vocalist) Tomi Koivusaari's Cookie Monster contributions to "The White Swan" and the stunning opening tandem of "Weaving the Incantation" and "A Servant" (featuring a notably ripping guitar solo), or experience retrofitted quasi-replicas of the folk-meets-death Tales from the Thousand Lakes era in the almost spookily authentic "Shaman" and the purely acoustic "Enigma." On the other hand, they can experience several examples ("I of Crimson Blood," "Her Alone," "Black River," and the title track) of Amorphis' more recent forays into softer and progressive realms, where Joutsen's gentle croon often shares the spotlight with pianist Santen Kallio's majestic themes. And, finally, just to keep things interesting, the wild card "Towards and Against" blends echoing electronics with semi-industrial guitar textures, a disco-metal beat (probably copped from chart-topping countrymen Nightwish), and guttural and clean vocals for a truly head-spinning hybrid. In the end, it's obvious that Silent Waters lacks same the creative cohesion displayed by most of the group's previous albums, but it's also true that its "one size fits all" strategy manages to represent more of the many "morphs" in Amorphis' long existence than anyone might have thought possible.

Finally!!

Finnish melodic death/doom metal maestros are finally back! If you are among the old fans following the band for the last couple of decades, you might feel the sensation. In my opinion, Amorphis' albums after Elegy were rather disappointing. However, I was so relieved after hearing the Silent Waters, as my hesitation of listening to yet another average Amorphis album (such as Tuonela) disappeared instantly. I strongly recommend this highly melodic and sentimental yet powerful Amorphis piece.

Wow...

This is Amorphis's best since Tuonela. Eclipse was amazing as well, but this tops everything. You can't help but wonder how many different influences came together when Amorphis started, and how many more there are now. I don't even know how to describe this masterful piece of art from a truly incredibly talented band. Amorphis is a very epic, melodic type of band. They aren't for every fan of metal, but they are indeed for those who can enjoy the many forms an instrument can take. If you can handle true beauty in metal, you go right ahead and enjoy all it has to offer. It's not common that something this magnificent comes out.

Masterpiece

This is easily the best album Amorphis has ever created. This album is just complete epicness. IMO its way better than what everyone thinks (and i thought) is their best album, Tales Of The Thousand Lakes. This album has pretty much three styles. It has a Death Metal side, Progressive Metal side, and a Folk Metal side. Just think of Opeth only with shorter songs. IMO Amorphis is just as good as Opeth, and Opeth is one of my favorite bands. Best songs are A Servant, Towards And Against, I Of Crimson Blood, Her Alone, and Enigma. But dont get individual songs, do yourself a favor and get the whole album, you wont regret it.

Lead guitarist Esa Holopainen and drummer Jan Rechberger formed the band Amorphis in Finland in 1990. The demo was so successful in getting attention for the group that they had acquired a record deal and released an EP the same year. They next released their first full-length album, The Karelian Isthmus, in 1992. The following year, their early...
