iTunes Review
The Get Up Kids broke up in 2005, but their 2010 Simple Science EP is regarded as a "comeback" record. Of course this all may not matter much after hearing the opening "Your Petty Pretty Things" because it simply sounds like the band never broke up. Matt Pryor's boyish vocals still sing sincere lyrics hoisted by winding guitars and a bouncy rhythm section punctuated by Rob Pope's elastic sounding bass keeping things grounded on the disintegrating bridge. "Keith Case" grooves on Pope's bass running through a fuzz-pedal and Pryor's distorted singing sounding like it was recorded through a bullhorn. More classic indie-rock than emo, "Tommy Gentle" recalls the early-‘90s' underground with pedaling bass, driving guitars that make good use of stomp-box effects, and the importing of tastefully light keyboard notes which adds another dimension of melodic bliss. They leave the best for last with "How You're Bound," an atmospheric piece that experiments with gauzy soundscapes to make for a song so good that the Get Up Kids should consider breaking up at least once a year.
Customer Reviews
whoah.
Thank you. After hearing keith case live, i couldn't wait for this. Four great songs. Knowing this is our first taste... GIVE ME MORE!!
nice.
I'm glad the majoity of people like the EP as much as i do.. I have seen a few reviews talking about how there sound is so different..how they have strayed from their straight forward pop-emo sound heard on earlier albums. Here's the thing..bands change. When a band has been around for 15+ years, their sound developes with their members' lifes, aging, and all the different experiences that come along with getting older. Do you know how boring it would be if all of the great bands that stuck together for this long kept the exact same sound for their entire careers?
Indeed a lot of bands that change their sound fail..some horribly, but i feel that TGUK has evolved is a wonderful way. I can hear a more pronounced change in their sound that was starting to become evident in Guilt Show (i.e., "Is There A Way Out"..really the last 3 tracks of the album)..and then add a 6 year gap of 'side projects' for most members and this is what you get: I much for experienced and well colaborated mesh of sounds. I hear a lot of 'Spoon-like' bass riffs from Rob and a lot more grown up, more serious 'New Amsterdams' like lyrics from Matt.. Anyway, I am ranting like a madman.
This EP is a great tease for the album yet to come.. can't wait.
