Album Review

Simply Eva is another collection of posthumous Eva Cassidy recordings, but with a twist: all but one of these performances was recorded with the artist accompanying herself solely, with an acoustic guitar — either in Chris Biondo's studio or in front of club audiences between 1993-1996. Cassidy's devoted fan base has heard her perform the material before, but not in this way. Her live-in-studio readings of "Wayfaring Stranger," Christine McVie's "Songbird," Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," and Paul Simon's "Kathy's Song" (this one with all verses present) resonate with even more intimacy — if that is possible — than the previously released "finished" versions. The reading of "Over the Rainbow" featured here is the one from the Blues Alley performance from the Rainbow video. While Cassidy's version of Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" doesn't top the songwriter's, it does shine brightly, as does her brief a cappella take on "I Know You by Heart." Another surprise is this reading of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," which showcases Cassidy's fingerpicking skills and canny sense of rhythm. If you're a fan, you need this; if you've been wondering what all the fuss is about, the naked intimacy of Simply Eva is among the most convincing arguments yet for her posthumous reputation.

Eva the Angel

This albums speaks for itself! Sadness sets in when the music is over and the memory competes with silence. Eva left us with a few tight albums and a voice not to be silenced.

one of a kind

without a doubt, one of the best and most underrated voices of our time. she was taken from us way too soon, but this album will show the world what she was all about. rest in peace Eva...you are an angel

GOLD - This IS unreleased/new material!

So apparently, Blix street was searching through Cassidy's archived recordings; live acoustic sets, studio outtakes, etc., searching for a potential Christmas Single for the 2010 season. Perhaps in an attempt to duplicate the runaway U.K. (and worldwide) success of Over the Rainbow from Christmas 2000, perhaps just an effort to continue to cultivate interest and appreciation for her undeniable gifts. Whatever the reason, these efforts also yielded this collection, which is much more than just a re-release of recordings you already (may) have. Every track is unique from the previously released versions, and every track is free from the artifice of studio gimmicks and such that can crowd even a talent like Eva. What you end up with is the bare essentials, as Eva as Eva can be. Simple, POWERFUL, and right there in the room with you. It's almost spooky, the presence these recordings radiate. So yeah, you've heard these songs before, but these unreleased versions were assembled with affection by the studio who has been entrusted by Eva's family with the care and continuation of her legacy. Give it a fair spin; it's SO worth it.

The heart-tugging story of Eva Cassidy reads almost like the plot of a "Movie of the Week" tearjerker. A native of the Washington, D.C., area, the painfully shy Cassidy earned a local reputation as a masterful interpreter of standards from virtually any genre, blessed with technical agility and a searching passion that cut straight to the emotional core of her material. Despite the evocative instrument that was Cassidy's voice, record companies shied away from her, unsure of how to market her eclectic...
