iTunes Review

After reducing things to a quiet, sad and desperate whisper for his post-divorce album Devotion + Doubt, singer-songwriter Richard Buckner returned to an acoustic / electric mix for Since. His third album includes the tougher, excited range of the opener "Believer" with its rough, chugging electric guitars and the brutal band power of "Jewelbomb" alongside the lonesome hush of "Boys, The Night Will Bury You" and the solemn folk roots of "Ariel Ramirez" and "Once." Signed to a major label, Buckner used the expanded budget not to gloss over his sound, but to better support it. The guitars are thick and warm. The harmonies are strategically enforced ("Faithful Shooter"). The drums come together in perfect collision with Buckner's unique countrified delivery where he skates over notes with an optimism often at odds with his fatalist lyrics. Buckner was one of the ‘90s most fascinating singer-songwriter discoveries and Since is arguably his most fully realized album.

Since - Richard Buckner

I discovered this album on lastFM. This is one of Richard Buckner's best, check it out. This is one of America's hidden gems and a very much under appreciated artist. He has a very unique sound and voice. Not sure what the lyrics are about half the time, but if the music is good enough; it does not really matter. Some call this alt.country but I think that is putting a limit on what Richard really is, yes he will use a steel guitar but never over use it. Probably only here in the US do we have such wealth of talent that eludes popularity. This album deserves way more than one customer review BTW...

Incredible album and artist

An absolutely gorgeous piece of work. Buckner's writing and delivery are completely original and yet true to the great folk and country traditions. This album has it all, the hushed whispers and fingerpicking of "Ariel Ramirez" and "Pico" too the off kilter country rock of "Jewelbomb" and "Believer". And never has one word been so powerful as in "Faithful Shooter". A mandatory album to anyone who values truly great American music.

Amazingly pleasurable listening!

Richard Buckner's music is so emotional, in a novel country style that's completely hip and effective. Beautiful!

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

This husky-voiced country-folk singer/songwriter is very much in the mold of the Lubbock, Texas, school of mavericks, including Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Richard Buckner is actually based in San Francisco, but the Lubbock connection is no accident. His debut album, Bloomed, was recorded in Lubbock, for one thing, with producer Lloyd Maines, who has also worked with Hancock, Allen, Joe Ely, and Uncle Tupelo. Maines himself plays several instruments on the...
