iTunes Review

This tight, spunky quartet from Manchester, England virtually defined the ‘punk-pop’ genre, using punk’s raw, quick energy and immediately applying it to well-crafted harmony-driven pop songs that ripple with impolite thoughts and honest love-conflicted emotion. Yet, unlike their many followers, the Buzzcocks maintained their sharp edge even when skirting their softer side. They neither grinded abrasively nor artificially sweetened a thing. Nowhere is this better heard than this excellent, exemplary 1979 collection of early singles, most of which had never appeared on a proper album.  From the opening whelping menace of “Orgasm Addict” through the quick-jump cut fury of “Love You More” and “What Do I Get?,” the band deftly walk the line between sweet and sour, leaving the punk politics of the era to others and settling for the clever cynicism of “Everybody’s Happy Nowadays.” “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t Have Fallen in Love With)” is a deserved classic, while ‘Why Can’t I Touch It?” finds the band unexpectedly spreading out towards more experimental terrain, suggesting the end of the era.

An Introduction the REAL thing

by "Convincing People"

Although this "album" is often talked about as an album and not a hodge-podge of style and experimentation, "Singles Going Steady" is a fantastic step for anyone exploring the genre. Buzzcocks were never as deep (nor as pretentious) as bands like Echo & the Bunnymen or the NY Dolls, but they always found the groove. Just as fresh even 40 years later, "Singles" introduces you to solid entertainment. Never preachy or political, their music remains important. Buzzcocks remain relevent today. It is shocking when you hear Everybody's Happy butchered and processed and playing in the elevator. In a time when Iggy Pop is cashing royalty checks from Carnivale Cruse Lines, the slimmed down sound of "Singles" is both accessible and pulse-pounding. If Echo can pull it together to tour in support of an album, this LP brings me back to a wilder time. I just LOVE this collection. It's a perfect gift for an experimenting ear. When I heard my 12 year old daughter listening to Green Day, I dug out a few LP's, bought an analog to digital adapter, and made up MP3's for her. The first 3 were "Singles", "Crocodiles", and "London Calling". Anyway, enough rambling. Buy this album, and gift it to the Gen X-box crowd.
