iTunes Review

Roy Orbison wrote profoundly human songs and sang them with the voice of a suffering angel. In his finest work, he seemed to embody heartache itself; Sings Lonely And Blue (1961) signaled his emergence as rock’s most accomplished balladeer and still has the power to induce shivers. The operatic reach of his vocals — tremulous, yet strong as steel — turn confessions of weakness into declarations of power. His great theme as a songwriter was thwarted desire, expressed here in the immortal pop aria “Only The Lonely” as well as lesser-known tracks like “I’m Hurtin.” Orbison could offer tenderness as well as seek it, as shown in the heart-melting “Blue Angel,” and his versions of “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and “Bye-Bye Love” draw out a personal resonance from even familiar cover tunes. Stylish accompaniment by the likes of pianist Floyd Cramer and saxophonist Boots Randolph blend with elegant strings to enhance these tracks, but the spotlight never leaves Orbison for an instant. Nearly 50 years on, Sings Lonely And Blue’s sublime moments of yearning remain thrilling to hear.

*i just love him*

i hav been searching for a cd with pretty one on it since i was about 5 years old. My dad used to sing it to me, and a lot of the other songs on here. It is an amazing album

this is why he is famous

roy orbison is a great, great singer indeed, but he got his start from the love ballads that are present here. if it weren't for these classic, purely sung songs, roy orbison would not be where he is today....

pretty one

the best music I have heard to date. he Roy Orbison beats Presley hands down. What a voice, not to mention the emotion he has and provokes in his listeners.

Born: April 23, 1936 in Vernon, TX

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s

Although he shared the same rockabilly roots as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison went on to pioneer an entirely different brand of country/pop-based rock & roll in the early '60s. What he lacked in charisma and photogenic looks, Orbison made up for in spades with his quavering operatic voice and melodramatic narratives of unrequited love and yearning. In the process, he established rock & roll archetypes of the underdog and the hopelessly romantic loser. These were...
