Album Review
The Style Council's albums were always weighed down by their far-reaching musical ambitions, which meant that their ideas were usually best heard on their singles. And while this period of Paul Weller's career has been criticized heavily, he wrote several excellent songs during the Style Council, most of which are featured on the fine compilation The Singular Adventures of the Style Council. Not all of the 16 songs are first-rate, as it begins to lose steam toward the end of the band's life, but "My Ever Changing Moods," "You're the Best Thing," "Long Hot Summer," "Shout to the Top!," "A Solid Bond in Your Heart," "Money Go Round," "Walls Come Tumbling Down," and "Speak Like a Child" are terrific, and make the collection worthwhile for fans of the Jam and Weller's solo career, as well as fans of New Romantic new wave and jazzy sophisti-pop.

The 'Style' of The Style Council
After the first time I heard "My Ever Changing Moods" I ran out, bought the single and played it to death! When I got around to the rest of the 'album' ( I still have the vinyl) I was not disappointed. From start to finish Style Council leaves its mark. The cool jazzy sounds on 'Have You Ever Had It Blue' to the pop beat of 'Speak Like a Child'. All the radio hits are here, but the gems are the ones that the radio never played or hardly ever played. "How She Threw It All Away" is one of my TSC favorites. Not only did the music sound jazzy and cool, but the lyrics of Paul Weller are fantastic. Whenever I here The Style Council it will remind me of those nights in the 80s getting ready to go out, cool black suit, thin black tie, hat and TSC on the turn table.
Paul channels Curtis Mayfield
As Paul Weller's muse tired of London being the center of his emotionally evocative world, he was drawn west towards Chicago and Curtis Mayfield's post-Impressions funk-filled wanderings. Horn stabs, girl singers, piano, organ, you-name-it, color and shade these TSC tracks, many of whom still evoke late Jam, but the best explore the heart of Sussex soul.
The Singular Adventures of the Style Council
One of the best bands ever. Out of the 80's, they have a unique jazzy yet alternative UK sound. Originated fame about the same time as EBTG with that more mellow sultry backbone. However throwing more upbeat transitional songs and beat into every album. Much the same way that other bands followed and approximately when The SC fell out of the music scene. Listen to "The Lodgers" "Long Hot Summer, 'How She Threw it All Away" to get a feel of the alt jazzy side. This is one band that led the way for a new genre of music and dropped out of the game too early!
