Album Review

Colony is a four-piece hailing from Missouri consisting of lead singer Ted Bruner, bassist John Stuller, guitarist Jon Armstrong and drummer Matt Hickenbotham. Their first major label release, following the independent Go, is 1997's Siren, produced by long-time k.d. lang associate Ben Mink who also adds violin, guitar and mandolin to the album. The sparkling music, optimistic lyrics and overall maturity of the music reminiscent of Toad the Wet Sprocket makes Siren a solid bid for acceptance in the adult-alternative market. There isn't really an unsatisfying track on the entire record, which easily roams from folk to pop to flat-out rock. The lyrics are insightful and best exemplified on "Past the Girl," which captures infatuation, lust and the possibilities that might lie ahead. Other suggested tracks include the quiet nostalgia of "Dance Again"; "All My Heart," which breaks into a pulsating, psychedelic-tinged chorus; and the elegant harmonies and Spanish guitar on "Go," which succeeds in conveying a sense of motion. There's nothing on Siren that hasn't been done before, but it isn't always done with this much style or grace.

Listen to "Go"

I'm not sure the band's still around, you probably can't get a hold of their other albums... It doesn't matter. Listen to "Go" and then buy the album whole you won't regret it. (Need more convincing? Try "Remain", "A Lot Like You" and "Past the Girl")

Although the album failed to catch on nationally, Colony built a sizeable audience by gigging around their hometown. 2001 saw the group receive...
