Album Review
Sister 7's debut release introduced their mix of straight-ahead hard rock in the Led Zeppelin style, soul, and funk-rock, the most distinguishing feature being guitarist Patrice Pike's strong and earthy vocals. The songs establish a tense atmosphere, but they're not original enough to have much more going for them than that. It's not quite as bombastic as much of the hard rock that got heavy airplay in the mid-'90s, and not quirky enough to gain much favor outside of the mainstream. Originally issued on the Rhythmic label, it was reissued by Dualtone in 2001.

Sister 7: R.I.P.
Sister 7 was a band that should have been played on every radio station in the land. They fell victim to Arista's reorganization and fell between the promotion tracks. Sister 7 [previously known as Little Sister] was the soundtrack to my college days in Austin, from when they used to play the Black Cat Lounge on 6th Street. The opening track to this album, "Meantime," demonstrates all the things I love about them, from the opening, pounding percussion to the funky bassline to the meandering guitar to killer vocals. Sister 7 was more than your typical 90s jam band. Patrice often pulled out her bongos or jazz vocal chops live, and as a cohesive unit, everyone in the band complimented one another. I'm sorry that even their reunion show days are long gone. To call this album a "debut" is a misnomer...if you can find them out there, look for the live album "Free Love and Nickel Beer" recorded at Dallas's Club DaDa under the name Little Sister, and an earlier release called "Freedom Child." "This the Trip", their break-up "Live" album, and the phenomenal, not-a-bad-or-filler-song-to-be-found "Wrestling Over Tiny Matters" are all amazing, too.
Remember Little Sister?
Patrice is still belting out the lyrics, but I long for the days of Little Sister singing all the Free Love and Nicle Beer songs live. Ahhhh the good old days.
Not Free Love & Nickle Beer, but still Patrice
Love anything Patrice does. One of the best bands to see live. Memories of college and Deep Ellum, I love this music!!
