very good album

I sort of have mixed feelings about this album. It's undoubtably a very good album, a lot of different sounds going on here. It's a much more stronger sounding album than previous ones. It's perhaps not as light hearted as early works but not as bombastic as oh perilous world. The subject matter is a depiction of 1800's New York so i guess that's where i get mixed feelings from since i can't really relate as much as i would for other albums. I would recommend this album to any fan of their music but with the understanding that it's very different from other albums.

a welcome throwback

This album may seem like a departure from the band's sound, but it's not. It's actually a throwback to Rasputina's first album, Thanks for the Ether. After the magnum opus that was Oh Perilous World, the band lineup has changed, and founder Melora Creager has opted to re-explore the roots of Rasputina, with simpler production and a stripped-down sound. It's an approach that provides a nice contrast to recent work and a reminder of what fascinated listeners who have been fans of the band since the early days: Melora's quirky yet hauntingly pretty songwriting and her distinctive porcelain-doll voice.

Stunning!

One of the most attractive things I think a band can do is shift their sound from album to album while still retaining their own personal distinction. It's a tall order, but with an instrumental lineup as unusual as Rasputina's and a lead singer with a voice as beautiful and unique as Melora's, Rasputina pulls it off nicely. "Sister Kinderhook" is definitely reminiscent of "Thanks for the Ether". It's just as strange and melodic, and just as hauntingly beautiful. If you enjoyed "Thanks for the Ether", you'll enjoy "Sister Kinderhook".

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The New York City-based trio Rasputina was led by singer/songwriter Melora Creager, a classically-trained cellist who backed Nirvana on the group's final tour. In 1992, Creager placed a want ad seeking other cellists to form a rock band; among those responding was Canadian musician Julie Kent, and with the later addition of Polish native Agnieszka Rybska, Rasputina was born. The three cellists' image further developed by the addition of tightly-laced vintage Victorian costumes, their gothic chamber-pop...
