Album Review

Columbia/Legacy's 2005 release of the compilation The Best of Loggins & Messina: Sittin' in Again spurred the duo to do a full-fledged reunion, complete with a nationwide tour in the summer and fall of 2005. At the end of the year, Rhino put out Live: Sittin' in Again at the Santa Barbara Bowl, which documented one of the first of those concerts. It's a warm, friendly show, with just the right amount of slickness. These are a couple of old pros and they know how to polish these songs for the stage, and how to sequence a set list so the hits are scattered among the 13 featured songs, all positioned in precisely the right place to give the show the right amount of momentum. While that doesn't necessarily make for an exciting live album, it does make for a pleasant one — Loggins & Messina play all the hits, from "House at Pooh Corner" to "Your Mama Don't Dance," and they have a nice, easy rapport that is as enjoyable on record as it is on-stage. While this certainly won't replace the original recordings, any fan excited by a Loggins & Messina reunion in 2005 will find this to be a good souvenir.

No sitting here, just standing ovation for "Sittin' In Again"

As someone who saw Loggins & Messina in concert in the mid-70s, even the rumor of their reunion after so many years was enough to resurface my beloved collection of their albums. For those of you new to this duo, you should be pleasantly surprised at the richness and harmony that Kenny and Jim bring with their classic melodies, honest and outdoor fresh lyrics, beautiful blend of instruments and unique talents. I've read quotes from their 2005 summer-fall tour that this release was meant to be a "return to that time that was special for both" ... when their first collaboration together 30 years back brought the original "Sittin' In" album (which was just supposed to be Jimmy producing newcomer Loggins debut record, but they sounded so good together... well, the rest was history). Younger folks may know Kenny from his solo work ("I'm Alright" and "Danger Zone" and "Footloose"); Messina produced less in his solo years, but has not lost any of his earlier Poco or Buffalo Springfield refined skills. "Sittin' In Again" means, thankfully, sitting back again and soaking in a duo that often surpassed their recording gems with even better live performances (as they do here again) ... don't miss this one!

And this answers the question...

...exactly how far down Obscurity Lane would Loggins and Messina have to be before they swallowed their dislike for each other and toured a thirty-three-year-old album. Only--and I mean ONLY for those who absolutely, positively HAD to hear "House At Pooh Corner" done live in the twenty-first century. The rest of us can just get off the twee train at the next stop.

Good feelin' music

I saw Kenny Loggins a couple of years ago. He said he was talking about a reunion. Kenny is terrific solo - but they are better together. This is choice stuff.

Biography

Years Active: '70s, '00s, '10s

Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina were the most successful pop/rock duo of the first half of the '70s. Loggins was a staff songwriter who had recently enjoyed success with a group of songs recorded by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band when he came to the attention of Messina, a record producer and former member of Buffalo Springfield and Poco. Messina agreed to produce Loggins' first album, but somewhere along the way it became a duo effort that was released...
