iTunes Review
Philadelphia’s The War On Drugs hold the perfect balance of classic rock and spaced-out indie rock. Members Kurt Vile, Charlie Hall and Kyle Lloyd departed the band at the end of 2008, leaving founding singer and guitarist Adam Granduciel to recruit drummer Mike Zanghi and bassist/guitar player Dave Hartley. Yet somehow, 2011’s Slave Ambient sounds a lot like 2008’s Wagonwheel Blues. “Best Night” sets the tone like Nebraska-era Springsteen as accompanied by the musicians who played on Spiritualized’s Songs in A & E. Throughout Slave Ambient there’s also a prevalent lean on Krautrock-inspired repetitions, immediately noticeable during the first song’s end jam and in the hypnotic “It’s Your Destiny.” The consecutive pulsing speeds up on “Your Love Is Calling My Name” where Granduciel’s nasal-toned croons recall a young Tom Petty under driving indie-rock oscillations braided together with some dream-pop ambience. Fans of the band’s previous penchant for anthemic epics will feel right at home with the uplifting “Come to the City.”

War on Drugs Newest Offering
A boomer here, stumbled onto this Artist searching through new offerings under i Tunes Store. Listened to several tacks ad decided to download the entire cd.
Was amazed, the songs were put together well, the lyrics were outstanding, the cd came off like music offerings from earlier eras, where the songs and album hung together well individually and as a entire piece. The music transitioned well into the other songs and it was tied together in a way you do not hear any more, like it was thought through, not like this crap form these one hit wonder groups that do not seem to be able to grow or evolve.
I can see the similarities to Dylan, but although he was a genius, his music was rather simple from a tonal quality. This group seems to have melodies and tonal sounds that are far beyond Dylan's some songs are similar to the Verve', sounds, the first cut seems like a blues track from the Verve's Forth cd.
Why aren't radio station playing music like this instead of rap, hip hop crap and R&B songs by artists that are so afraid of their own voices they disguise it in changes ad cadences that destroy the lyrics and lessen the importance of their voices.
Overall this Artist and cd are a great find in a sea of crap out there, pumped out by corporate media companies that only seem to care about hair, make up and outfits on artists, most of which will be has beens in a year or two.
Great Artist and cd.
