iTunes Review
Sounding very much like a British band mashing up glam, punk and ‘60s icons such as the Stones and T-Rex, San Diego bad boys Louis XIV jump-started their career in 2004 by wooing fans across the pond (touring and selling their own self-released Louis XIV), where they created a buzz that leaked back to the states resulting in a deal with Atlantic Records. This follow-up to their raunchy and raucous 2005 major label debut finds the band detouring a bit from the path they started on, adding copious amounts of violins, cello, piano and even a smidge of flute. They’ve employed composer David Cambell, aka Beck’s dad, and the result is bigger arrangements and deeper dimensions, resulting in a sound that’s less garage and more classic (try not thinking of David Bowie when you hear “Air Traffic Control”). While they’ve traded in the “girls, girls, girls” meme for one that is more political in nature, the boys still wanna have fun. “Guilt by Association” shows vocalist Jason Hill frolicking in dramatic histrionics, fueled by snappy drumming, jittery guitars, and slashing strings and synths thumping along on an adrenaline dance beat. Sometimes growing up pays off!

Amazing progression and great live
Let me say that overall I like the Best Little Secrets better as it just translates fun and sexiness on every song. But this is such a richer and deeper recording (like the famed wall of sound) overall that the it is not much of a downgrade, even if there are far more skippable songs (bees, hopesick and sheep). The twin violin is pitch perfect and translates so well live, reminding of great ELO, especially on Guilt and Air Traffic, two of the best songs of the year IMO. But the playfulness is back on Tina and Sometimes, and Stalker and Slick Dogs are nice mood pieces. See them if you can.
Better than the first.
Slick Dogs and Ponies was a better album than the first because Louis XIV developed the album's sound a little more and made it deeper, also helping was the fact that the band's talent has increased, allowing them to play better and more difficult music. Though the first album was fun, this one exceeds it in almost all aspects. The vocals from Jason Hill and Brian Karscig melt perfectly together. Mark Anders' drum playing has always been good and continues to be so. Jimmy Armbrust's bass playing has become much more sophisticated, with basslines that a listener might actually pay attention to; bass became a little more than just a beat in this album. Also, the fiddle playing is phenomenal, and works well with the rest of the instruments. Since i can't give it a nine out of ten, this album receives a five out of five from me.
LOUIS XIV FAN!!
