iTunes Review
Sounding very much like a British band mashing up glam, punk and ‘60s icons such as the Stones and T-Rex, San Diego bad boys Louis XIV jump-started their career in 2004 by wooing fans across the pond (touring and selling their own self-released Louis XIV), where they created a buzz that leaked back to the states resulting in a deal with Atlantic Records. This follow-up to their raunchy and raucous 2005 major label debut finds the band detouring a bit from the path they started on, adding copious amounts of violins, cello, piano and even a smidge of flute. They’ve employed composer David Cambell, aka Beck’s dad, and the result is bigger arrangements and deeper dimensions, resulting in a sound that’s less garage and more classic (try not thinking of David Bowie when you hear “Air Traffic Control”). While they’ve traded in the “girls, girls, girls” meme for one that is more political in nature, the boys still wanna have fun. “Guilt by Association” shows vocalist Jason Hill frolicking in dramatic histrionics, fueled by snappy drumming, jittery guitars, and slashing strings and synths thumping along on an adrenaline dance beat. Sometimes growing up pays off!
Customer Reviews
HAIL TO LOUIS XIV!!!
XIV reasons to buy this record. 1. Inspired songwriting and memorable melodies 2. When was the last time you heard creative string arrangements in a rock song. 3. It's strong like their last album but completely different, a step forward. 4. The cover is infrared and you can upload yourself into it. 5. They dress well. 6. If you have appreciation for Bowie, Queen and ELO, you'll dig it. 7. The production is completely their own...modern, yet retro. 8. Brian rocks the beard, oh yes. 9. Jason maintains to keep a stylish haircut and his Alex Harvey pomp accent intact. 10. Did I say they wear tight trowsers? 11. Guy-liner...check. 12. Chicks dig them. 13. Louis XIV has the SG/Rickenbacker guitar attack, a rock classic! 14. It's better than 99.99% of the crap out there. Bottom line, a bunch of very talented blokes.
The Reign of Louis XIV
Slick Dogs and Ponies is Louis XIV's sophmore major lable LP. The album comes prepared with no less than three tracks that are chart worthy. Guilt By Association will get stuck in your head. Air Traffic Control is great to listen to while driving. And There's a Traitor in This Room may be one of the best songs the band has released so far. In contrast to 2005's The Best Little Secrets Are Kept, Slick Dogs and Ponies has a heavier feel. Darker lyrics (Stalker, great song, creepy lyrics), deeper melodies (Hopesick...worth every second) and heavier riffs (Slick Dogs and Ponies...listen to the lyrics). The band hasn't deverted from their signiture blend of Narcissism and Sexuality. Many of the songs on this album are peppered with the wry use of innuendo and overt lust, while at the same time being complex rock overtures with string support.
Louis XIV Does it Again
This album is fantastic--a worthy successor to their self title. Slick Dogs and Ponies packs catchy thumping beats and then slows down with swelling ballads that make your heart melt. "There's a Traitor In This Room" cannot be played on low volume. "Air Traffic Control" is achingly beautiful; "Guilt by Association" demands attention and even some shameless dancing. And their cover of "Eleanor Rigby" is the extra layer of icing you weren't expecting--absolutely incredible. My favorite band, an amazing album. Check them out--you won't regret it--in fact, you may punish yourself for not finding them sooner. And I think they'd like that.
