Datri Bean's jazzy, soulful music will brighten your day

I have to admit that I am a friend of Datri's. No, she did not suggest in any way that I write this review. That being said, I love her music. As Datri's first album this is an incredible composition. While she did most all of the work to create the album herself, she did it in a truly professional manner. The recording studio that she used in Austin, Texas is top notch. She had the guidance of an excellent sound engineer, and many other seasoned pros in the making of this album. Special recognition should go to the bassist on most of these songs, Rob Jewett, for really pushing Datri to get the album started and putting her in contact with many of the people who contributed to the album. Another luminary that participated is Stanley Smith (Asylum Street Spankers) on clarinet. The spankers are a big influence on Datri's work. Ok, enough for the folks who helped make the album. Now for the Music. I really suggest that you listen to track 8 "Mother". This song always gives me chills. This song is a prayer. I had not heard the version on the album until just recently. Previouslly I had just heard snippits of it in passing. It took me seeing Datri perform it in the intimate setting of a living room house-concert to feel the impact of this song for the first time. I have a hard time doing justice to the feelings that "Mother" evokes in a few words, but you cantruly feel Datri's love of the feminine devine. This is not to say that all of "Slow Down Summertime" is as tear jerking as track 8. The title track number 2 is wonderfully evocative of spending an afternoon lounging on the shores of Barton Springs in Austin. Track 9 "Whole Jug O' Wine" has a wonderful lyric that is included in the sample found here. It goes: "I am right where I want to be. In your arms, there's nothing that compares to you. I feel so sweet. I feel so heady. Is it you or the lilac wine?" I love that. Drunk on love. What better of a story is there to tell? Datri Bean will be doing a tour to promote this album. She is incredible to see perform live. If you like this music, go see a show and take your "sweetie" with you. Buy this album. When you fall in love with it, buy it for your friends, your lover, your mom, your sister in college, and your brother who just broke up with his girlfriend. Anyone who likes the Asylum Street Spankers, Tori Amos, Nina Simone, Hoagy Carmichael, Ani Defranco, and the many fabulous independent female singer songwriters out there will appreciate this album.

Like so many fun things...

I think my favorite is "I Saw Your Sign"... it was my fav from the first listen. Similar to Ditty Bops, but with a slightly more bluesy/jazzy (and, yes, more serious) feel (IMHO). This really is a very entertaining album... the Datri's storytelling will only get better. If you have a chance to see Datri, please do... it is always worth your time.

Wonderfully Addictive

I actually saw Datri at a show last night. She is a wonderful performer, and a very nice lady. I Love this CD!
