iTunes Review
Singer-songwriter John Hiatt's songs have usually been a gold mine for everyone but himself, becoming hits for artists from Bonnie Raitt to Three Dog Night. But it took well over a decade for Hiatt to crack the charts himself with 1987's Bring the Family. That sense of joyous accomplishment courses through almost every cut on this 1988 follow-up, a confidence that belies the album's haphazard gestation. It's an album whose sinewy, country-fried textures stem largely from a wise decision to eschew the previous album's all-star studio team in favor of recording with Hiatt's longtime backing band, the Goners. Hiatt's songs are also looser and often more lyrically barbed than he'd produced on Family, and range from the fiery, slide guitar-seasoned Southern rocker "Tennessee Plates" to the family centered title track. and such heartbreakers as "Is Anybody There?" and "Icy Blue Heart."

John's Finest
This is the type of album you take on a roadtrip and soak up every lyric along the way. John really digs deep on most of these songs, but even the fun songs like Trudy & Dave are very enjoyable. A true American classic ...
A Classic
While not a critically praised as its predecessor or successor, this is a superb, musical album. This is Hiatt at his best: relaxed, clever and irresistible. Cannot recommend enough.
John Hiatt/Slow Turning/Anything
Saw John last night in Rochester.......the best performance I've been to in the last 20 years (which includes Sting, Fogerty, Mellencamp, and Mathews!!!) The man is a showman and performer, and his 3 member band was as tight as any I've ever had the privilege of seeing. What an honor to have finally seen him in person!!!!
