As always

Lifehouse as always comes out with music that's full of emotion. The stuff you wanna hear when you wanna feel human

Warning to older fans, have an open mind!

When I first heard some of the songs off of the album I was a little disappointed. I am a die hard Lifehouse fan of the past 10 years, so I was shocked by the "change" with some of the tracks. But then I stepped back, took a look at the lyrics and all the layers of music, and asked myself one very important question. Am I the same person I was 10 years ago? NO. I have grown, changed, and yes conformed from my teenage rebelion. This is the same approach you MUST use in listening to this album. It's different, mature in some respects, conforming in some, yet the same Lifehouse in others. Mature as in "Nerve Damage" and "Smoke and Mirrors", confroming as in "Falling In, Halfway Gone, and "It Is What It Is" and the same as in "In Your Skin", "From Where You Are" and "By Your Side". The traditional Lifehouse elements are still there, sometimes buried deep within the song and maybe hard to find. I think this album is a great representation of the past 10 years of Lifehouse. Each album is different, and you must have an open mind to accept the change. Some may call it selling out, some may call it broadening a fanbase, either way they make it work.

Smoke & Mirrors

Smoke & Mirrors may not be a mirror image of the past, but it's definitely a fantastic new sound for Lifehouse.

Song by Song Review (for me personally) :

1. All In : 10/10 - Kind of reminds me of Disarray from “Who We Are” which was one of my favorites. Still a great song though. I really like the acoustic guitar with the constant bass drum going, then a sudden increase in instrumentals and powerful lyrics and vocals.
2. Nerve Damage : 7/10 - The boring verses don’t really grab my attention until the chorus (which has a pretty cool guitar and rhythm for the vocals). Probably one of my least favorites from this album.
3. Had Enough : 9/10 : Overall just a good song that has some catchy beats
4. Halfway Gone : 10/10 - Obviously the smash hit single that every single person should know by now. Great song in general.
5. It Is What It Is : 10/10 - Very powerful lyrics with a nice soft slow feel to it. I really like the echo in the background. This is a very well made song.
6. From Where You Are : 9/10 - The other single that has been out for a while now. Pretty slow paced song, but makes the lyrics more meaningful
7. Smoke & Mirrors : 8.5/10 - This song is decent, but doesn’t compare to most of the other songs on this album. Could have picked a better song to name the album after. Although it kinda does sound a little bit like the Lifehouse we’ve seen in the past, some may like this song better than others.
8. Falling In : 9.5/10 - Cool guitars with an echo, catchy beats, good lyrics that really hit the point of the reason they wrote this song.
9. Wrecking Ball : 9.5/10 - Good range of vocals, I like the high vocal echo in the background as well. Good symbolism of a wrecking ball to tie into the lyrics. The drums get me bobbing my head a little bit
10. Here Tomorrow Gone Today : 10/10 - Interesting sound in the voices at the beginning of the song, and I really like how the drums and guitar get into the chorus. The vocals are really powerful and strong in the chorus. I like it.
11. By Your Side : 8.5/10 - Good song, there’s a bit of everything. I like the key change at the end, right after it gets slow.
12. In Your Skin : 9/10 - The guitars are really cool at the beginning and before each new verse, which I like as acting as a transition between the verse and chorus.
13. All That I'm Asking For : 9/10 - Once it actually gets into the song, the different sounding instrumentals are really neat and catchy, with a little violin towards the ending. Like the echoes again.
14. Crash And Burn : 8/10 - This song has an alright sound to it. I do like the notes in the chorus. Good addition to the Deluxe Version of “Smoke & Mirrors”
15. Everything (Live in Studio) : 7.5/10 - Obviously a lot of people love this song, I was just never really a fan of it. Too slow for me.
16. Near Life Experience 6/10 - This is probably the worst song on here in my opinion. All it is is just talking, and talking, and talking... Might only be of a little interest to most people once they get the words memorized.
17. Don't Wake Me When It's Over (Bonus Track) : 8.5/10 - I like the gradual progression to the song, and it’s still a good addition seeing as it’s a bonus track. Good song.
Overall Rating : 9/10

So really, a lot of the songs in this album kind of sound the same with the echo sound in the voices and the strong 2 and 4 beats in the faster paced songs to get my head bobbing, but that’s the kind of stuff I’m beginning to like from these guys! If you’re a Lifehouse fan, I’d recommend buying the Deluxe Version of “Smoke & Mirrors”, and if you’re just hearing of Lifehouse, I’d recommend testing out the regular version. Way to go Lifehouse on “Smoke & Mirrors”!

Biography

Formed: 1996 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Led by singer/songwriter Jason Wade, Lifehouse emerged in the early 2000s with a commercial blend of pop/rock melody and throaty, post-grunge vocals. Wade, who originally tagged the band Blyss upon its inception in 1996, was raised by missionary parents in a variety of locales. He eventually settled in Los Angeles with his mother and took a keen interest in songwriting. Bassist Sergio Andrade lived next door, and the two spent hours in Wade's garage, fine-tuning their original compositions and laying...
