Album Review
Snakebite is the best and most cohesive Magic Slim album to date, where all the things he does best come together in one place. Expertly produced by Dick Shurman, this spotlights all the groove that makes Slim a bandstand favorite, with none of the rough edges that mar his other studio or live efforts. The songs are top-notch (seven of the 11 tunes here are Slim originals), and this version of the Teardrops — Nick Holt on bass, Allen Kirk on drums, and Michael Dotson on second guitar — lay a greasy pocket down behind their leader that fits perfectly. Slim's vocals are spot-on, and his guitar work is his most focused yet. A truly inspired session, this is the perfect introduction to Magic Slim.

Great
Magic Slim & The Teardrops are simply a force of blues. Slim is a soulful singer who is complimented by the occasional use of backup vocals. He is an incredible guitar player and the Teardrops just may be the tightest and overall best blues band in the country (they've won the "best band in the land" title at the W.C. Handy [the Blues version of the Grammy's] many times.) The title track is a guitar workout in the vein of "Black Tornado", with Slim hissing "ssssssnakebite!" in a humorous and highly enjoyable fashion. If you are looking to buy a Magic Slim record for the first time, start with "Anything Can Happen", then "Black Tornado". If you like those (which I'm sure you definitely will), this album will be a logical and welcome addition to your collection.
