iTunes Review
Aside from the Direction Reaction Creation box set, Snap! is the most comprehensive mix of UK singles, album tracks, B-sides and rarities by UK modfathers The Jam — especially since this 2006 edition comes with 12 bonus songs. Originally released in 1983 following the band's breakup, Snap! boasts such essentials as the anthemic "In the City," the subcultural paean "The Modern World," and the angular power pop of "Going Underground." But it also offers fan favorites like a punk-fueled cover of The Kinks' "David Watts," and working-class, fist-pumping songs like "All Around The World" and "The Eton Rifles" as well as more fetching ballads including "English Rose.” This update adds such standouts as an acoustic demo version of "That's Entertainment" and songs hinting at the more smoothed-out, suave direction frontman Paul Weller would carry over into The Style Council — most notably "Absolute Beginners" and the soul steeped "Town Called Malice." Whether you're a longtime fan or new to The Jam's legacy, Snap! is an essential overview of the band that got the British bulldog barking again before influencing Brit pop's third wave of mod (Blur, Elastica, etc.)

The Greatest Band you never heard of ?
It would be impossible to explain to American music fans who never heard this band how HUGE they were in Britain for a span of about 5 years. Unfortunately they were so "British" that by the time they dented the American charts with "A Town Called Malice" they were gone. But in there brief but stellar career they conquered the Home island with single after single which are well represented in this collection. Only a trio, they managed to pump out some incredible Power Pop/ Punk classics. "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" is just one example of song-writer Paul Weller's ability to scathingly attack British society and its seeming apathy in the late 1970's. Like Ray Davies before him Weller and the Jam might be too Anglo-centric to get the full credit they deserve as equals to Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, and Strummer/Jones. Brilliant, rousing, martial, songs!
Well Done, iTunes!
I am sometimes a harsh critic of iTunes, but this time they got it right. I own everything song the Jam released. Records and cds. The live stuff, the box set, extras, etc. But I always kept my pristine vinyl copy of Snap! because it is so well done. These are the best versions of each song arranged in an exciting, perfect sequence. This is the Jam collection you will want to listen to over-and-over, even after you've bought every recording they made. And if you're an absolute beginner, you couldn't place to start!
Paul Weller's birth
I still have this double album on vinyl. Their influence on today's music is massive, but unrecognized.
