iTunes Review
All Hope Is Gone took Slipknot four years to make because the masked mephistos were busy with other evil endeavors. Singer Corey Taylor and guitarrorist Jim Root found success with side project Stone Sour and drummer Joey Jordison worked with Ministry, Korn, 3 Inches Of Blood, and percussionist Shawn Crahan's band Dirty Little Rabbits. But don't think that All Hope Is Gone sounds like Slipknot have been spread thin — the outside experience gave their sinister sound more musical strength, making for an album that is darker, deeper, harder, and more possessed than their predecessors. It's the first time all members were involved in the songwriting. The experimental noise collage of ".Execute." crescendos into the opening track "Gematria (The Killing Name)," a brutal onslaught of pummeling rhythms and guitar artillery that catapults the anti war lyrics. "Psychosocial" delivers brutally heavy drums that march alongside monstrous guitar riffs contrasting with a melodic chorus of powerful anti-occupation rhymes. And with a fierce title track and three exclusive iTunes bonus songs, this one's going to be hard to top.
Customer Reviews
Not bad, just feels bland and unorginal for Slipknot.
2 1/2 stars for All Hope Is Gone:
Slipknot use to be the heaviest nu-metal band next to black metal/death metal. Even their slowest songs were heavier, darker, and even more twisted then most songs in the 90s. Every song Slipknot had poured hatred and sorrow. Then comes All Hope Is Gone. It was descriped more as a cross between Iowa and Vol 3. Iowa with even better riffs AND solos? Sign me up! What Slipknot really meant was that All Hope is a cross between Vol 3 and Stone Sour. But let's move on to the album itself.
Slipknot seemed to want to go down the path of the bands coming out these days...but all in one. They play breakdowns in light of Atreyu and the light/dark contrast of Killswitch. But does it work? But the best word be "No?...". Corey has always been above par most metal singers, but he seems to sing alot more now. Corey even swoons his voice on 'Gehenna', like the Jonas Brothers. I am dead serious. Corey sings really high and swoons his voice. Corey brought more of Stone Sour along with him then he was told to. All hasn't changed, though. The drums are still pummeling, the DJ scratches here and there, and the keyboardist does...nothing.
All Hope is Gone's main problem is pacing. They stop with the Iowa influence after track 4, then they do the 'Toxicity' effect of bobbing in and out of heavy and light. And there are alot of light songs, 'Vermillion' light. This makes me feel like I heard this from other bands who have done it better, like Killswitch or possibly Mastodon. Though these bands do this mid song to keep things intresting, Slipknot does one pace then switch to the opposite setting throug out the entire album. Then comes the riffs.
Oh god, they sound too familiar. A main example would be 'Gematria' which sounds ALOT like People=Sh*t. The riffs in here also sound too much like the song 'Hatredcoptor' from Dethklok. The solos here aren't in so many numbers as one expects. I think there are about 3 the entire album, or mabye I wasn't paying attention considering to many songs feel like filler. Lyrically wise, it's better. The lyrics just seem more poetic then before. Slipknot is more political, but what isn't today?
In the end, Slipknot is embracing the mainstream and forgot the good changes from Vol 3. In effect, they have turned into the 'bullsh*t music' they hated. Slipknot hasn't fallen to the full extent change like Korn (they very well could), but they haven't kept honest like Disturbed. And in all honesty, the old material is just better in general. Old school Slipknot fans should borrow this from a friend, for if you do you WILL feel let down. Newer fans will like this for it will ease them into Slipknot's other BETTER material, and it is more radio/Ipod friendly.
Please rate yes if agree, or not.
Good things come to those who wait. The (sic)ness is back!!
After recent controversies regarding the band's lyrical content, AHIG proves that the only people who should be threatened by their lyrics are the deaf, dumb, and blind. Slipknot is hatred most people will not embrace, fear they cannot face, and the remedy (spit in their face!). If you still believe the world is fine, America is not a laughingstock to the rest of the human population, and that religion is not choked with politics and hypocrites, this will be a tough pill to swallow.
In Gematria (The Killing Name), vocalist Corey Taylor screams 'America, what if God doesn't care??' over what is most likely the most brutal thrash metal track on the album. The message here is loud and clear: all hope is gone for humanity if we continue on this path of destruction. We cannot rely on anyone or anything -- not each other, not our world leaders, not religion. We must save ourselves. We must think for ourselves.
Each track sounds different than the last. The record really kicks off when you are hit with a 1-2-3 punch of some of the best songs. Psychosocial, the first single, is possibly the most creative song on the album instrumentally, with a grinding, adrenaline-inducing riff in the style of industrial pioneers Ministry. Dead Memories, although very powerful and catchy, has the typical Slipknot edge to it -- depressing but hopeful, as Corey bleeds out obvious pain in the vocals. Vendetta is easily the best crowd-rousing, energetic, jam-along-able track. 'ARE YOU READY FOR THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE?’ is all the description needed.
Other highlights include Gehenna, a song about obsession in the vein of Prosthetics or Vermilion. At moments during this song, you get the feeling you're listening to Iowa before it bursts into the Alice In Chains-style chorus. Then there's Snuff, a song that deserves its own review. It's both heart-wrenching and angry, with loneliness and self-loathe dripped between the notes. To some it may sound like Stone Sour, but to me it sounds like Slipknot at its emotional peak. There's no two ways about it: it just may be the perfect song. But as with other acoustic songs in the band's resume, it will be forever stuck as a diamond in the rough, never getting the credit it deserves.
Slipknot has proven time and time again they are unlike any other metal band in the whole world. They demonstrate more diversity and musical prowess over four studio albums than most bands can display over 10. We are the lucky ones - we are the ones living in the time of legends. They have seen the fall of the elite, they'll find a way when all hope is gone -- but the question they're asking is: will you?
Amazing! It's Slipknot.
At first I questioned the Stone Sour esque of this album but as I listened to it more, I found that It is still the best band in the world but every band evolves in some way. It is so amazing what these guys can do! Their music can get me though anything!
