WOW. Now say it backwards

Honestly, I was pretty surprised when I first saw this album. When I looked at the price, I was even more shocked. I can say this much though after closer inspection. While possibly not worth the 35.99 iTunes is asking for (I'd say 24.99 would be fairer), this album not only covers Neal's time with his extensive solo career, but it also covers his time with bands such as Spock's Beard and Transatlantic. On top of all that, there are simply medleys (and even one new track!) that just simply are not able to be found any where else. That is what this makes this a must have for any diehard Neal Morse fan, as they will find themselves quietly being able to reflect on the various musical avenues Neal has explored in his extensive career, which is most likely the reason that this album is called So Many Roads. Also, fans just discovering Neal's work will love this album, as it offers a subtle introduction into some of Neal's better musical moments. While the track times themselves seem rather daunting, Neal simply wips them out in his sleep, a talent most musicians WISH they had. Even though the album is not likely to get much (if any) airplay on this side of the Atlantic, this album will go down as one of Neal Morse's finest (and most extensive) works.

Best recorded version of At the End of the Day

I know that may sound like sacrilege from Spock's Beard fans, but it's true. Neal's Euroband does it better than it's ever been done before. For me, that track alone was worth the price of admission (which, admittedly, was $20 from Radiant Records and not $35 here). There's so much more here to enjoy, but I know Beard fans who haven't followed Neal's solo career will want to hear this album.

Pricing brings the rating down

OK, so why would a 3 CD set that sells for 19.99 from the record company (plus shipping) sell for 35.99 on iTunes? Has Apple really charged so much more for licensing? To be fair, I have only listened to samples from the record label's web site. Neal Morse does supurb prog rock, and there's no doubt that this is an excellent collection. But until Apple brings it's pricing in line with the actual cost of the CD set, I won't get it here. By the way, this page lists 13 songs, as does the record lable's track listing, so this isn't some iTunes only special edition. Make it a fair price and it gets 5 stars from me.

L.A.-based singer/songwriter and guitarist Neal Morse began his musical career early, taking piano lessons at five and performing in musicals and beginning guitar by the age of nine. By the time he reached his twenties, Morse wrote two musicals and played with Al Stewart and Peter White.
