Album Review

Arcadia was the arty quarter of Duran Duran's side project. Members Simon Le Bon and Nick Rhodes were left to complete it after Roger Taylor left the group. They still strove to create the "western evocative of east" blueprinted by Japan's Tin Drum. They didn't achieve it with this, but it's certainly the best album Duran never made. Like earlier work Rio, the sleeve perfectly describes the record inside. The opener "Election Day" is darkly romantic irking toward erotic and has brass stabs not dissimilar from their Bond score View to a Kill. The following songs are lighter: "Keep Me in the Dark" and the U.S. single "Goodbye Is Forever." "The Flame" has a sharp beat and sultry bass groove that nods at Nile Rodgers. Two dream works, "Missing" and "Rose Arcana," precede "The Promise," which guests Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour, Sting, and Herbie Hancock. "El Diablo" has a latin flavor but still sounds like two Englishmen daydreaming of an escapade to El Salvador. Finally, to the dramatic splendor of "Lady Ice," a fantastic conclusion to a very good album. Thankfully, Arcadia chose not to pursue this album like their other Duran offshoot.

One of My Favorite 80's Albums

by Kings999

I was always a die-hard Duran Duran fan during the 80's (loved Simon and Roger), but when the band went their separate ways for awhile, I (along with millions of other teen girls) was crushed. A friend of my mom's told us to check out Arcadia's So Red The Rose, even if it was only half of my favorite band. So, I gave it a shot since I was starved of my favorite over the pond band. Arcadia was everything Duran Duran wanted to be. Haunting, beautiful, dark, sensual, dramatic and moody. It reminded me of Seven and the Ragged Tiger, my favorite Duran Duran album. The music and lyrics had a depth to them that most music back then (and even now) lacked. I bought the LP and played it so much that the vinyl was thinning, especially on side two where Rose Arcana to Lady Ice were my favorites. I then bought the cassette so I could listen to it in the car and on my new state-of-the-art walkman, pre-ipod for you youngsters. I went through three tapes. I still have the original LP packed away, but the tapes didn't fair to well. When I bought my first CD player, Arcadia and A-Ha were my first purchases. I had to buy them at a speciality record shop that imported CD's from Europe ($30 to $40 a pop), but the price was worth it. I have so many memories of this album. It was the soundtrack to my high school years, the album I daydreamed to and used as inspiration, when I needed it. A greatly underestimated album and one that needs to be savored. It gets better every time I listen to it.

Fantastic Album!

I have had this CD for quite a while and it's outstanding. Certainly a bit of departure from the traditional Duran Duran, but you will not be disappointed. It is an extremely hard album to find and even most radio stations I have called have not heard of it let alone possess a copy.

Truly a must.
Enjoy!

A classic if there never was...

This is the artsy album we all would have loved to have made back in our new-romantic days..... This is probably the essence of duran duran without andy taylor. Take away the guitarist who wines all the time about not being able to jam his axe and this is what you are left with. Not to offend the Pink Floyd fans out there and i am one of them, this could be classified as Pink Floyd meets electronic/funk/artsyfartsy but without the story telling. Jam up El-diablo while on a long road trip you will soon find your left foot tapping. If you dont have this album GET IT! you will enjoy it. This was written by a lover of music in general, ALL music.
