Real songs for real people
So much of the popular music of the last decade relied heavily on marketing, clothes, image and vocal gymnastics, but like so many expisodes of "Survivor", that music had absolutely nothing to say. Enter "So Sweet" by Monica Marquis. In contrast, Monica writes her own material, communicating hope, everday courage and a real picture of inspiration, acceptance and self-expression. This girl has something to say and emotionally connects with the material. This CD is packed full of great songs, creatively arranged and executed, some fine backing horns and attractive harmonies. But its the meanigful lyrics that remind of us what has been missing for the last ten years.

Monica Marquis new cd "So Sweet" can best be described as just that. This is music that soothes the soul and invites you to dream. Her voice melts over her lyrics and the music plays with her like children in a playground. This is clearly the work of an evolving and emerging artist who displays her growth from her last cd, This Is Me" and is not afraid to wear her heart out on her sleeve. A rarity today. She is a consummate musician and joyful performer. This is music to live by. I highly recommend her new cd to anyone of her current fans and enthusiastically invite new listeners to discover Monica Marquis, a wonderful and unique artist on the rise. Down load it today and be prepared to smile...a lot.
This music brings me back to the 70's
What do you listen to when you're a musician? There just isn't much you CAN listen to, with all the stupid tricks and pony shows clogging the airwaves. Well, this last summer I heard a local musician in the Bay Area who has the focus on sassy grooves and fun. She did great covers of Stevie, Steely and even some Sly, and then broke out with some of her own stuff, which all sounded like it could fit in the same compilation, no kidding.
Now all that new stuff is on this album! I'm so stoked to hear the clear studio recordings of this, but can't wait to hear her again in the small lounge where I first heard the sultry sounds of Monica Marquis.
My current favorite track is the title track, So Sweet, which is just sassy as all hell, and an amazing horn solo in the middle of all that funk; made me remember TOP (Tower of Power) and the old greats by EWF (Earth, Wind...). That said, I've played this album many many times over and it gets better each time.
Please please come out with another album, Monica! This is solid gold, and I'm going to recommend you to my friends at the college station. They're going to love your mojo.
