This is an interesting archival release. This band consisted of New Yorkers relocated to Indiana. I would say that the 'No Wave' tag is a bit of a stretch - maybe in a funky(ish) ESG kind of way but this is not reminiscent of the typical No Wave noise of Mars or Theoretical Girls. Some of the farfisa + syncopated percussion (provided by a drum machine on most of the tracks) reminds me a bit of middle-period Stereolab. My only real complaint is that the CD contains 3 less songs than the digital release and I had to kick down an extra 3 bucks for the entire album.

Social Climbers was involved in the downtown New York City no wave scene along with DNA, Teenage Jesus, and the Contortions, but they were still one of the lesser-known art rock bands of the ‘80s. Singer/guitarist Mark Bingham moved from Bloomington, Indiana to Manhattan in the mid-'70s and started playing guitar in various ensembles with Glenn Branca (who would later form Theoretical Girls).
