Album Review

Sogno consists entirely of new compositions, much of which are deliberately skewed toward the pop audience whom Andrea Bocelli was well on his way to earning in the spring of 1999. In other words, it's an album that seems to be a progression, at least on the surface, but it's also a consolidation of the crossover audience that he wooed over the course of the late '90s. Sogno pulls off that trick, balancing Bocelli's opera background with modern pop and Italian music. That stance alone — finding a middle ground between classical and modern pop music — will alienate the purists (who, truth be told, haven't been all that thrilled with Bocelli in the first place), but this doesn't discredit the music. True, there are moments on Sogno that don't work as well as others, but overall it flows nicely and maintains a fine balance between pieces that suggest opera without actually being opera, and adult contemporary songs such as "Nel Cuore Lei" (a duet with Eros Ramazzotti) or the Celine Dion duet "The Prayer," which was originally featured on the soundtrack for The Quest for Camelot. The most interesting moments are songs like "Come Un Fiume Tu," a collaboration with Ennio Morricone that manages to not only find a middle ground between those two extremes, but to push forward, as well. Songs like these keep Sogno fascinating, but it's the adult contemporary-flavored numbers that stand to bring in a larger, pop-oriented audience, who will then likely explore the rest of Bocelli's catalog. For skeptics, however, the very presence of pop-leaning numbers will confirm their doubts.

Simplay Magnificent

This is the kind of album I wish everyone would hear, "The Prayer's" seemless transition between the two amazing singers keeps one captivated even after the finish. I couldn't ask for anything better from an artist, which is what Bocelli really is. He's an artist who has perfected the very art of fine music. He is one ,who, in this day and age, with such uncomforting concerns in everyday life, is able to reach out and grasp your heart....keeping you level and relaxed.....even if only for 4 minutes. I will continue to love his fine work, and I hope even more people come to realize his talent.

Great Album

Another of Bocelli's great albums. Doesn't get much better, but then again I say that every time he comes out with a new CD.

Sogno album, Andrea Bocelli

It absolutely takes my breath away to hear Andrea sing. He is gifted with a great talent. He has a powerful voice and sings with so much emotion, it give me goose bumps when I listen to him sing. This week he gave another concert from Las Vegas for the Education channel during one of their fund drives. He performs for those drives often and it is always a pleasure to hear him.

Biography

Genre: Classical

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Andrea Bocelli has been called "the fourth tenor." A disciple of Luciano Pavarotti and Zucchero Fornaciari, the blind, Tuscany-born vocalist emerged as one of the most exciting voices in contemporary opera during the late 20th century. His participation in Pavarotti's 1992 hit "Miserere" and Fornaciari's 1993 world tour helped propel him to international attention. Opera represented only one side of his musical persona, however, as Bocelli fared equally well as a pop ballad singer, recording duets...
