Album Review

As if to erase any doubt that he is doing business as Breaking Laces, singer/songwriter/guitarist Willem Hartong appears alone on the cover of the "band"'s second album, Sohcahtoa. On the album's tracks, he is assisted by a number of musicians, most prominently Chris Liberti, who contributes some combination of bass, keyboards, electric guitar, and drum programming on most songs, as well as mixing and co-producing the record. But this is Hartong's project, and, decked out in T-shirt, shorts, and mismatched socks on the cover, he appears to embody the persona of one of his songs, "Geek in Love." As that title suggests, his songs tend to be introspective but appealing. They are well-crafted pop tunes set to his acoustic guitar playing, sung in a gentle croon, with catchy hooks and romantic (if geeky) lyrics. The spare, engaging style is reminiscent of the Police, if that band were led by an introverted, bespectacled guy in Queens, NY, instead of an assertive rocker like Sting.

breaking laces is not a waste of money$$

the first song i bought was geek in love, and i wanted to sing it for a talent show, so i tried to find the lyrics, but they weren't anywhere, so i emailed the lead singer, and he's hot, and he emailed me back pretty fast, and told me them, so then i listened to the rest of the songs, and they're all really good......BUY IT!!

Pretty Darn Good. Give it a listen.

Their music is absolutely catchy. Their album as a whole contains enough variety throughout the LP that it is a very enjoyable listen all the way through. They definitely have a sound all to themselves and I value that in a band. My only criticism is that their lyrics can be a bit simple and uneven and they lack a sound that separates them from bands they sound similar to. The band is very chill and works for good background music. I hope they keep making music, because I feel they have potential for a breakout album. Definitely downloadable are "geek in Love" and "global Warming Day". I really don't like "One Way Out".

good stuff

I love the title and anyone who took algebra 1 in high school should appreciate it too. the band has some good stuff. give it a listen.
