Album Review
While The Yellow and Black Attack! earned Stryper a fair amount of publicity, it was Soldiers Under Command that put the band on the map commercially. The album went gold, and Stryper became a major hit on MTV without abandoning its Christian message. Glossy yet intense pop-metal like "The Rock That Makes Me Roll" and "Surrender" definitely promotes Christianity, but does so without condemning non-Christians or pointing the finger at other religions. Ironically, one of lead singer Michael Sweet's influences is Rob Halford of Judas Priest — although Stryper and the Priest have little in common lyrically. Like The Yellow and Black Attack!, Soldiers Under Command is decent when it comes to up-tempo songs, but weak when it comes to ballads. "First Love" and "Together as One" demonstrate that all too often, Stryper's ballads were much too sugary for their own good.

One of the greatest Christian Metal Albums Ever!
Stryper Rocks! nuff said
CLASSIC FREAKIN' METAL!!!
One of the best hard rock albums of the '80s! Period. The guitars shred... drums pound... and if you aren't careful, you may just find yourself digging on some "Jesus Rock". This album is just freakin' metal!! 777...
One step closer to greatness
This was the album that proved Stryper were more than just a Christian novelty act. The musicianship showed significant growth from the first album/ep. And the songwriting started to show signs of maturity. The ballads were still hackneyed and in need of fine-tuning, but the up-tempo stuff really put a whole new face on the definition of Christian rock. To this day, the guitar break in "Soldiers..." is one of my favorite leads of all time; it still smokes out of the speakers as fresh as ever. Quick note to "I rule..."; I dig those new bands too, and probably listen to them now more than Stryper. But if it wasn't for these guys blazing the trail and setting the example, there would be no Demon Hunter, Disciple, Underoath, etc.
