iTunes Review

You don’t run across a résumé like Jason Beck’s too often. The Canadian-born Beck reinvented himself as Chilly Gonzales, a gonzo hip-hop and electronica producer and MC of some repute. Trained as a child on piano by his parents, Gonzales would use the instrument to help generate themes and ideas for his composer and producer duties, but he eventually turned his full attention to piano music. The result is a blissful, minimalist collection of “16 piano themes for left-hand accompaniment and right-hand melody,” composed and performed in its entirety by Gonzales. These are fragile, almost childlike patterns that seem to draw on elements of (what we call) classical, jazz, folk, Tin Pan Alley pop, and 19th century parlor music, without ever settling in any particular vein; “Manifesto,” for one, seems to display all of these influences. It’s hard not to think of Erik Satie (listen to the exquisite, delicate “Armellodie”) and other golden-age French pianists, thanks to the impressionistic nature of these mood pieces — and, especially in Satie’s case, the music’s purity and reserve. This is simply gorgeous, often mesmerizing work, suitable for close listening or as a soundtrack to an afternoon nap.

Words Can't Describe It

This is purely a masterpiece from start to finish, and anyone that says this music isn't jazz influenced has no idea what jazz really is. There are so many influences in this album, starting with the first track "Gogol". It reminds me of Gershwin at times, as well as classical influences, such as Chopin. This album is purely a work of art and will surely be the soundtrack to my fall and most likely winter. I give it an A+, I'm pretty sure it will become a staple in my music collection. Cheers to Gonzales for a beautiful piece of art, which I do not call music very often. Take my advice and give it a listen. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

One of my favorite albums

Every song on here plants a seed the first time you listen to it. Its just a seed, nothing special. But the more you visit that seed, the more it has developed into the flower it is becoming. It just has so much emotion in each song that you only find after hearing it multiple times. But it is worth it. It's an amazing album.

soothing, and lovely

The songs that are played are very soothing, and lovely. I am a huge fan of piano music, and this does the trick for me.
If you love any classic piano music, I'm sure you'll love this. It even has a tiny hint of jaz in it.

Gonzales (also known as Chilly Gonzales) is an MC meets keyboarding-producer meets singer extraordinaire. At a young age Gonzales was introduced to the piano by his parents and over-achieving brother. Using the instrument as an avenue of self-expression, he quickly advanced into the production realm. Through his Hollywood-based older brother, Gonzales wrote music for soundtracks under various aliases. Though born in Canada, the artist took up residence in Europe just after signing to Kitty-Yo, mainly...
