Album Review

This St. Louis-area group's debut album is filled with radio-friendly rock and pop songs, notably the leadoff track, "Shelter," which resembles Matchbox Twenty inspired by Linkin Park. Lead singer Ryan Jordan leads the proceedings on most of the album, with satisfactory guitar work by both Andrew Dwiggins and Marc Wanniger. But in some cases, the overall sound sounds a trace over-produced for its own good, moving into a territory only Def Leppard would be capable of pulling off. "Sustain You" and "Breathe" are lyrically quite good, but the arrangements are a bit soft in the middle leading to the chorus. The strings added to the latter song are subtle but take the song to a different level. The strong hooks on arena rockers like "Strong" and the infectious "Louder Than Words" should please listeners, resembling a softer Incubus at times. Too often, though, the arrangements sound too similar for the album's overall benefit, particularly on "Faces," which has shades of each song before it. "Dim Halo" is probably the best track of the dozen offered, twisting between emotional rock and arena rock ballads. "Radiance" is another heavy rock ballad, but a refreshing change to the other songs and the frameworks of each. A few songs with a different change of pace or tempo would help, but overall it's a step in the right direction.

A Very Solid Album

I first started listening to this band when their name was Soma Holiday. It's funny that they they titled the first album after their original name but I do like the sound of Greenwheel. This album is very good, I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Matchbox 20, Goo Goo dolls and that kind of sound. Great Album.

Amazing

This album screams passion... It's incredible!

Greenwheel

I have seen "Soma Holiday" (AKA Greenwheel) live numerous times. Ryan's vocals sound a little like Rob Thomas(not a bad thing) but, the lyrics differentiate. Greenwheel is more real, than "POP". I wish the label would take time to develope these guys into something more marketable. Go Van Gogh!

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Formed at a local record shop in 1999 in the St. Louis suburb of St. Charles, this group of high-school bandmates originally dubbed themselves Hindsight before changing their name to Soma Holiday. A self-released, self-titled album followed that same year and garnered a local buzz in the area. But after that brief period, the group basically went underground, performing only occasionally. At the same time, lead singer Ryan Jordan gave the group one year to make it in the music business. If the group...
