The "Sell-out" crowd may get their wish...

I am soooo sick of people tossing around the phrase “sell-out”. The vast majority of the people who apply this generic, worn-out term seem to suffer from a severe lack of creativity and vision. “Sell-out” is a completely cliché idea mired in irony, if not a fine example of a catch-22 or even a paradox. To “sell-out” a band needs to cave in to a specific audience with the purpose of gaining something, be it accolades/awards/album sales. These idiots have been following Metallica around since “Fade to Black” appeared on the Ride the Lightning album. Why? Because fans at that time wanted to hear Kill ‘Em All v. 2.0 and Fade was a departure from that. Most of the people that cry these days about the band “dying” after ’89 view Fade as a classic. Most of these same people are merely pouting because they haven’t gotten Master of Puppets v. 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, etc. Well, it looks as though these people may be getting their wish as Death Magnetic is being tabbed as a missing link between albums from this era. How ironic – selling out to the “Metallica sold-out” crowd. While I admit a lot of the recent albums haven’t been my favorite, I am able to see through all of the “sell-out” non-sense and see them for what they are, not to mention recognizing some very strong material that has been present through-out the post-Justice era. Metallica would have been roundly panned for not evolving / spitting out Puppets clone after Puppets clone – once a band reaches the level they did, they were going to be damned no matter what they did by one side or the other, and I applaud them for choosing to evolve rather than jog in place in an effort placate the simple-minded folk clinging hopelessly to the 1980’s. If you want more of the same formula rock – go buy an AC/DC album.

huh?

wait whay are u all hatin on this album? every song here is pre-89 except for some kind of monster.....

Not really Metallica fans.

I hate how people bash Metallica for "selling out" or becoming "alternative rock". Are you serious? It's selfish to think that over a span of over twenty years the band should stay "Indie-status". They were never indie, and a truely great band evolves. It doesn't stay and use the same gags & tricks. Not just a Metallica fan, but a music fanatic over all would marvel at the riffs and notes on every song. The same people that bash them for the already stated would bash them had they not evolved into what they are today. You guys need to rethink your words and figuere out if you're truely a Metallica fan, or just a scene fan. You scene kiddos make me sick.

Biography

Formed: 1981 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s. Responsible for bringing the genre back to Earth, the bandmates looked and talked like they were from the street, shunning the usual rockstar games of metal musicians during the early '80s. Metallica also expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions. The release of 1983's Kill 'Em All marked the beginning of the legitimization of heavy...
