A Welcome Return from the Smooth Jazz Wilderness

by Smokey 16

Like awaiting the return of a family member from years abroad, I was elated to hear Andy Snitzer’s signature sax sound on an iTunes jazz station recently. Like an old college buddy, I had lost touch with Andy’s music after a string of vibrant, energetic and heartfelt songs beginning with You’ve Changed from 1994’s “Ties That Bind”. He was beginning a hot streak with a feature spot on the title track on Bob James’ big hit “Restless (1994)” and continuing with A River’s Road, My Dream Come True and Blue Ruin on 1996’s “In the Eye of the Storm”.

With the proliferation of the Smooth Jazz genre and the dissipation of major jazz labels that ensued, truly edgy players seemed to be ignored on the airwaves here in Los Angeles.

Although a reissue on a different label, a new track, Passion Play (featuring Chuck Loeb), has Andy’s uniquely identifying style - almost pleading and lyrical like a vocal with a somber emotional edge, making this new track a must for any sax fan’s collection. The other track I highly recommend is the title track, although it feels a wee bit dated (originally released 1999). I only hope that Andy Snitzer is in the studio directly after his touring stint with Paul Simon to provide more new music ASAP!

Another Great album from Andy

Andy's great playing style, sound and intonation only enhance his creative ability. Andy will only continue to gain fans and followers. I highly recommend this album for those looking for something deep and meaningful.

Yes, PLEASE!

One word: Amazingly spiritual album. I mean, seriously, I just want to get up and do an interpretive dance. The words make me want to sing along and his voice just calms me. I think that if he hadnt put out this album, I would not be alive. OK, so he might not be the most attractive person ever..... BUT we forgive him for his unfortunate looks because his voice is beautiful. So just go out and buy this album. You wont regret it.......I hope.
