iTunes Review
The Descendents recorded a series of inspired albums for the New Alliance and SST labels that virtually defined punk-pop for the ‘80s. Their stack of incredible tunes included songs that skewered their suburban involvement (“Suburban Home,” “My Dad Sucks”), their innocent yearning for corrupt female companionship (“Clean Sheets,” “Sour Grapes”) and their shameless juvenilia (“Hurtin’ Crue,” “I Don’t Want to Grow Up”). Packed inside these quick riffs were undeniable choruses (“Cheer,” “Silly Girl”) that piled on the harmonies while the guitars churned with glorious distorted power chords. “All” and “No! All!” may be the quickest non-songs in their catalog, but tracks such as “Cameage,” “Get the Time” and “Good Good Things” are so essential to understanding where groups such as Nirvana and Green Day drew their craft that it’s practically criminal the Descendents never became household names. The punkish speed of “Kids,” “Weinerschnitzel” and “Myage” confirm their southern Cali punk roots. This “Greatest Hits” collection is an excellent introduction to the group, but also proves that each of their original four studio albums are essential in their own way.
Customer Reviews
You NEED to own this!
(Unfortunately) While not as widely recognized as their contemporaries (Bad Religion, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Minutemen) the Descendents are arguably one of the most influential punk rock bands to come from southern California. One can easily trace the roots of today's pop-punk & '90s punk to the Descendents (along with The Last & The Buzzcocks)-catchy, 3-minute or less songs about "rejection, food, coffee, girls, fishing, and food." While I recommend every Descendents release-they are all special in their own right-this compilation serves as a worth representative of their music; prior to the two recent releases (Cool To Be You and 'Merican). The strength of the band & their musical vision is demonstrated by the fact that this album covers over a decade of music, three different guitar players, three bassists, along with Milo's vocals & Bill's drumming. 'Favorites include: Coolidge, Suburban Home, Silly Girl, Get the Time, and Hope.
Not the best greatest hits
This song has too many of the silly songs (Weinerschnitzel, Enjoy, All-O-Gistics) on it for my taste. I suggest buying "Two Things at Once" and "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" first. Then get: Coolidge, Camage and Clean Sheets (originally from "All"). Then get: Kids, Hurtin' Crue, Sour Grapes, Get the Time and Cheer (originally from Enjoy). Now you have a perfect greatest hits. Whatever you do, stay away from Cool to Be You. That album is lame-o!
'Somery...of loving girls and growing up.'
This is a compillation of great songs by an underrated band that marked many of my best years. Although any band owes a great deal to it's influences in general, Descendents and ALL not only set the standards for Fast Pop Love Songs, but still outwrite and outrock any of the current bands from Green Day to whatever 17 year old kids are on MTV today. And they seem as fresh as ever.
