iTunes Review

Like their counterparts Judas Priest, Iron Maiden were rooted in Seventies hard rock but came to rule the Eighties metal movement. Somewhere Back in Time attempts to condense Maiden’s dominant decade, supplanting the previous single-disc collection, Best of the Beast. The fifteen tracks included here lean heavily on the band’s most successful album (1982’s Number of the Beast), while the remaining tracks are drawn from Somewhere in Time, Powerslave, Piece of Mind, and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. The band’s first two albums (Killers and Iron Maiden) are only represented by live tracks from 1985’s Live After Death. While “Wrathchild,” “Aces High,” and “Phantom of the Opera” display the feral power of the band’s concerts, it would be nice to see some album tracks from the early days. Nonetheless, one has to admire the leanness of Somewhere Back in Time. While those seeking more Maiden can get the double-disc Essential collection, the live-wire energy of this album offers a momentum and concision that is right in step with the band’s always-focused mindset.

I would consider this a "best of" classic Maiden songs, it's missing a couple of good ones (eg Running Free) but go get that for the extra $1. Enjoy
