iTunes Review

In 2006, 1950/60’s pop star Dion DiMucci (“The Wanderer,” “Runaround Sue”) released Bronx in Blue, a loving and authentic tribute to legendary blues artists like Robert Johnson and Howlin’ Wolf.  Dion pulled off more than a convincing performance, earning a Grammy nomination with his stripped-down acoustic guitar and warm, organic vocal style. On Son of Skip James, Dion revisits the blues greats and beefs up the instrumentation (with restraint), covering, among others, Little Walter (the honky-tonkin “My Babe,” written by Willie Dixon), Sleepy John Estes (a fabulously slinky, slippery “Drop Down Mama”), early blues-hollerer Tommy McClennan (“I’m a Guitar King,” where Dion shows off real finger-picking talent), and Robert Johnson again (“If I Had Possession,” with more impressive guitar work and genuine, blues-weary vocals).  It’s hard to believe this is the same Dion, but you gotta admit, the guy’s been through a lot and his life experiences have no doubt helped deepen his appreciation and interpretation of the blues greats of our time. Two original tracks color the affair with Dion’s own brand of traditional blues (“The Thunderer” may be the strongest song here), and there are moments that evoke the rich, introspective work of Nick Lowe. Blues fans, take notice!

the blues traverler

one of the best blues albums that i have heard in a long time

This is the real deal

Dion's voice and style is soulful and real! This guy's an icon and has to be recognized big time. I loved Bronx in Blue allot and Son of Skip James picks it up a notch and kinda really hits the spot. What a great follow up album. I can listen to this over and over again. It's the kind of blues that makes you feel good....it actually says and teaches you something you might not have known. Nice collection, Son of Skip James and Bronx in Blue, rocking from the roots!

Son of Skip James

If you loved Bronx In Blue, you'll like Son of Skip James. It's twelve more blues songs that feature Dion's great voice and guitar licks. There are no outstanding tunes, nor are there any bummers, just good blusey numbers. One bit of advice to Dion: lose the signature guitar riff and the overused phrase, "Little Girl." Buy B In B first, then, if you like it, buy Son.

Bridging the era between late-'50s rock and the British Invasion, Dion DiMucci (born July 18, 1939) was one of the top white rock singers of his time, blending the best elements of doo wop, teen idol, and R&B styles. Some revisionists have tried to cast him as a sort of early blue-eyed soul figure, although he was probably more aligned with pop/rock, at first as the lead singer of the Belmonts, and then as a solo star. Drug problems slowed him down in the mid-'60s, yet he made some surprisingly...
