iTunes Review

The title of Guy Clark’s latest live album highlights both his masterful skills as a tunesmith and his down-home charm as a raconteur. For nearly 40 years, this Texas singer/songwriter has turned out beautifully crafted tales of losers, lovers, dreamers, and desperados, making him one of American music’s most influential voices. Here, Clark is joined on stage by frequent collaborators Verlon Thompson and Shawn Camp, who add vocals and guitar (and contribute some tasty anecdotes) to this career-surveying set. Familiar tunes like “L.A. Freeway” and “The Randall Knife” are interspersed with lesser-known but worthy numbers like “Stuff That Works” and “The Cape.” Clark works his avuncular, twinkle-in-the-eye magic throughout, playing off of his old compadres while reaffirming his status as an alt-country legend. His rendition of Townes Van Zandt’s “If I Needed You” is an especially poignant salute to a departed friend. As this thoroughly entertaining album makes clear, Clark at age 70 has mellowed a bit, but is still an outlaw poet at heart, whether he’s being funny, ornery or compassionate.

Love and Respect

Guy may be in the twilight of his career but is still delivering on stage and this album is a great example of how he is able to entertain an audience to their hearts' content. He has surrounded himself with great musicians who also happen to be great friends of his. Their love and respect for this man is readily apparent in their music and performances. Guy's respect and love for them is apparent in his willingness to share the stage with them. This album is a demonstration of how music can cross generations of musicians seamlessly and seemingly effortlessly.

This contains great songs performed by one of the great song writers of our time accompanied by some exceptional musicians. If you like great songs and some serious picking in a live setting, this one will not disappoint. Get out to see Guy live if you can. You won't regret it!

Guy Clark doesn't just write songs, he crafts them with the kind of hands-on care and respect that a master carpenter (a favorite image of his) would have when faced with a stack of rare hardwood. Clark works slowly and with strict attention to detail — his output has been sparse since he first signed to RCA in the early '70s — but he has produced an impressive collection of timeless gems, leaving very little waste behind. His albums have never met much commercial success, but the emotional...
