Well done!
Excellent tribute album to one of the best bands of the 90s.
some paths are best left uncovered
I think that only The Constants & Junius really nailed their performances on this comp. I have remained a huge Hum fan since accidentally being delivered "You'd Prefer an Astronaut" by a BMG CD distro sometime in the mid 90s, and their music has since rarely left my player. I don't want to insult the other band's efforts, (it's only one man's opinion) but everyone besides the two above mentioned seem to miss the point. I think that I always brushed off the musical influence that Nirvana truly had over Hum and Failure, because I was sick of the 'imitator' label that critics wanted to place on those groups at the time. Truly, I still think that they were/are quite different musical monsters, but now I understand that they were being provided a certain environment by Nirvana's commercial success. One where the over complex, slick produced vocal had no place (ahem), it seemed a pop/metal sort of Creation records-esque stab by way of Steve Albini-ish or Sonic Youthy sound at the time (or like, a heavier, American response to shoegaze), where the ambient & over-driven were at the forefront & the vocals just added as, basically, another drone instrument noise. I think that's where most of this compilation (& the Failure tribute) fail. To any one that truly remembers "space rock" in the 90's, I'd say preview them all before buying, some of these tracks are truly cringe-worthy. Really, what this tribute makes me think about is, that Hum needs to record another album & save rock music.
