There is not a better album out this year.
Worth the 25 year wait! Just incredible, top to bottom. If they hadn't been one of my favorite bands for almost 30 years, they would be my new favorite band after hearing this record.
Wow, new Amebix?
How long has it been anyway? This is awesome. I love the vocals, the riffs, the songs. Yes, this is one great album. I don't know which tracks I like the most cause they are all good and interesting. I have been looking for something that was different and great and this is it. This is just really good and I know what I'm buying this weekend. (Physical copies always)
Pleasantly surprised
Typically when I hear that a punk band is reuniting after an extended time apart to record new material there is generally a sense of unease and even dread imagining what might come out in the process. This is usually because of the continuous let downs and disappointments issued by bands that are either too old or too clean to embrace the same energy their band had when they were initially formed. However, Amebix's "Sonic Mass" is an unexpected exception. Being their first original album in nearly 25 years, Sonic Mass is a dark and epic journey that signifies the hard labor that must've gone into this album. It doesn't sound like their old material, as their industrial influences certainly bleed into many of the sounds layered through out this album as well as the vocals which reminded me a great deal of Killing Joke's and Prong's more recent releases. However this change in sound isn't unwelcome as the same dark atmosphere present since their early albums is still there in a very different yet distinct form. It's not as fast and loud, but this album proves that they don't need to be in order to put out remarkably intense and thought provoking music.
