Exoticatronica: (Air÷Thievery Corp.+Moby/BuddhaBar)

THIS CD IS FOR YOU IF YOU LIKE: Air, Massive Attack,Thievery Corp., Zero 7, Groove Armada, Bjork, Buddha Bar, the Six Degrees label, the Verve Remixes, or the radio shows "Metropolis" on KCRW or "The Blue Room" on the BBC. Tracks 1-11 are uptempo/dance, tracks 12-22 are chillout/lounge. The song "Music is My DNA" is a fractal of the whole album; blow it up for close inspection and it does just what the entire "Sonorous Susurrus" release does: incorporate many genres, tempos, vocalists, and moods of music into a cohesive whole. "...DNA" includes Latin grooves, reggae stylings, references to traditional European music, and African chants woven together with accessible and contemporary dance music production. The complexity of K.I.A.'s "Sonorous..." full release ensures that it has a long shelf-life. There are some songs that are immediately catchy, for example "Be My Dj" (featured on "America's Next Top Model", by the way,) and the simultaneously fun and sad "Nevermine", but it's the deeper, downtempo songs (tracks 10-22) that will have you listening two or three years from now. Standout tracks: "Howdydaomaori" -mysterious chants in a haunting landscape; for Buddha Bar lovers. "Rise Up" -like a dubby Sigur Ros "Rashomon" -dance music as done by pointillist painter Seraut "Dubmarine" -chillout with a Jamaican toaster singing a couple haikus "Uneunoia" -instrumental lounge a la Boards of Canada *NOTE: Also check out the other CD by this band, "Adieu Shinjuku Zulu", which features the saddest song ever "Mrs. Major Tom", and two (dancier) releases recorded as Shinjuku Zulu, "Shinjuku Zulu" and "Various Chimeras".

Fantastic! Diverse! Downtemp! Uptempo!

Last half of the CD is beautiful chillout, great for headphones. Best tracks are Dubmarine (like Boards of Canada), Howdyadaomaori (like Thievery Corporation) and Uneunoia (like Air). First part of CD is pop uptempo stuff, not quite as stellar as 2nd half; best tracks are Nevermine (like a sad Fatboy Slim) and Rashomon (an aural dance collage, like Akfuen). Who needs shuffle mode when you have an artist like this?
