Wiggins brothers Raphael and D’wayne and cousin Timothy Christian Riley possessed the rare capability of fitting into their ’90s R&B era while commanding an encyclopedic knowledge of earlier days. Sons of Soul, their third album, offers sly, respectful reminisces of the Isley Brothers and, yes, Sly Stone while asserting the guys’ own vision in its wittiest, most original form yet. The jumping “If I Had No Loot” updates one of the oldest blues complaints in the book, while the lush “Anniversary” acknowledges the most romantic moments of the year without letting reality out of its sights (“Tell your supervisor you’re leavin’ early today”). And moves both internationalist (“Dance Hall”) and just plain oddball (“Tonyies! in the Wrong Key,” a wry nod to Stone’s “Family Affair”) do their parts to make this a great R&B platter for any age.

Furthermore, I'd like to delineate that on March 28th, they're going on stage at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, CA, for the Keith Sweat: Lady's Night Out concert; featuring, Bell Biv DeVoe and Keith Sweat himself.

They Done Broke Me Down!
by SGJR1960At the time when bands like Jodeci, Boyz 2 Men and Bell Biv Devoe were all over the radio dial, in spite of the occasional song that caught my ear just right, I was having NONE OF IT. Then I saw the video for "If I Had No Loot" on MTV one day, and thought that maybe they were worth checking out. I liked "Little Walter," but not enough to buy the album it came from.
With SONS OF SOUL, I had to give it up for TTT: they proved to me that they weren't just another R&B "boy band." Very few groups back then maintained the "new jack" sensibility while hailing their old-school roots, and they managed to do it on every single track. My big favorites: the best breakup song you can dance to, "My Ex-Girlfriend"; the lilting and beautiful groove "Leavin'", and a lush Isley Brothers send-up, "(Lay Your Head On My) Pillow".
