iTunes Review

Taking a leap from her reliable, fist-pumping techno beats to the world of ambience and art galleries, the slick and sometimes inscrutable Sool is quite a change for Berlin electronica artist Ellen Allien. Some fans may be put off by the stark, minimalist feel of many tracks here, but repeated listens often allow the pieces to open up and connect. Tracks like “Bim” and “Zauber” feel more playful, and slightly warmer, the more time you spend with them, and even quirky, experimental excursions — like “Sprung” and “Ondu” — become more engaging and less opaque. Synthesized embellishments such as twittering flutes, chattering castanets and meandering oboes are used with careful restraint, and encountering those small touches is half the fun. “Elphine” is engaging and almost sweet, but morphs toward the end to something darker, while “Caress” does the opposite, hinting at menace the first few minutes but lightening up with airborne synths and fairy-dust whooshes. Sool is certainly an interesting detour for Allien, and worth following as the artist chases her muse.

Love this Berlinette

Yeah, as much as I loved Ellen's work with Apparat & as much as I get the people who think Sool is a step down, this is blowing my mind right now & like some others I'd have to put it on the very top of what she's done. AGF's input is crucial here & unlike Apparat who lead Ellen the way of ear & body caressing IDM, AGF takes her down some pretty dark, cold & clinical, minimally lighted alleys, like in a maze of echoing corridors. Sool kinda meshes the brilliant, acid washed tracks Joey Beltram put out on Tresor in the 90s with the microsound of Monolake and the broken glass textures of Munich's great Funkstorung (RIP). If you think some of the last mentioned essential s**t, you should love Sool. If not, chances are you'll prefer Orchestra of Bubbles. Even then I'd still give Sool more time to unfold.

The Queen of Bips and Blips

Here's review from someone who doesn't mainline E. Not her best, but still there's lots to titillate one's cilla to the verge of tinnitus. Check "Orchestra of Bubbles" w/ Apparat for her more mainstream stuff.

fan-bloody-tastic!

i've long been a fan of ellen allien but this one to me takes the cake in her repetoire. right up there with the sounds of the greats in add n to (x) and stereolab but in a more refined, sort of germanic slickness and airiness in it's feel. its got be one of the best releases thus far and possibly of the entire year. a++++ ellen!

Like a lot of dance music producers, Berlin's Ellen Allien has had her hands in just about every aspect of her field. Allien's immersion into dance music began during an extended stay in London, at the height of the acid house phenomenon. Shortly after returning home she got into DJing, and by 1993 she had spun at Fischlabor, Tresor, and a number of other significant clubs. Throughout the remainder of the '90s, she hosted programs on Berlin's Kiss FM, worked at the Delirium record shop, operated...
