Album Review

Assembled mostly from (non-hit) 1963-65 singles, this is solid stuff, but a notch below their peak collections. The best tracks ("Soul Dressing," "Tic-Tac-Toe," "Can't Be Still") are usually included on their best-of anthologies, but "Plum Nellie," featuring some ferocious, cutting-edge solos by Cropper and Jones, is an overlooked highlight.

OLDIES!

Booker T. & The MG's rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More great music from the Green Onions crew!

This is actually a better album than "Green Onions" even without a hit single. The collection focuses on orignal material rather than covers, and the band is cookin' throughout. "Jelly Bread" borrows from "Green Onions" and sounds just as good, "Can't Be Still" is a percolating sequel to "You Can't Sit Down", "Night Owl Walk" has echoes of Jimmy Smith, and "Chinese Checkers" features some uncredited horn players and tasty Fender Rhodes work from Booker T. These dudes knew how to put down a groove. Highly recommended.

I feel better when its there.

Now thats paintin! Tonal Rembrandt! Always has always will!

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '90s, '10s

But in addition to their formidable skills...
