A Hidden Gem....Wonderful in every way
Super Geek League (SGL) is a Seattle based band that truly defies a label. I suppose it is appropriate that they are filed under "Metal" in iTunes…but does true metal include a (wonderful) set of trumpets? They definitely have some ska/punk elements, but with a singer who sounds like an angry, defiant Sarah Vaughn backed by a funky metal bass and superb guitar work? Their last album, "A Magic Castle Land," is worth buying. That album, however, is populated with a few 9 and 10's, but also a couple 5's and 4's.
Their latest album, "Soul Metal," never dips below 8's.
Soul Metal is brilliantly composed, powerfully performed, and excellently mixed. It's hard to pick favorites, but you should really listen to Jj Skewers (Superb trumpet work), Snake Oil (Vocals that will make you 'gasm), Hey Guy! (a perfect example of SGL's eclectic-ness) and Fight! (a true masterwork achievement, possibly their best song ever).
I can't stress enough about how catchy, fun, intense, hard and wonderful this album is. If you have any love for music, please give this a listen! And if you can catch them live…well, you are in for a one-of-a-kind experience.
