iTunes Review

DJ Greyboy pushes his music in new directions here, creating a slate of sharp, focused contemporary soul songs. The hip-hop, acid jazz, and funk foundation is still in place, and Greyboy builds gracefully on it, filling the program with tempting pop hooks and giving the whole album a smooth sheen. An array of singers, MCs, and turntablists are on board to help him fulfill his vision. The opening "Genevieve," with Bart Davenport supplying the vocals, has a popping bass line, supple beats, and wouldn't be out of place on a modern R&B playlist. While cuts such as "Son-Ray" and "Bronson" call to mind Greyboy's earlier work with their innovative futuristic grooves and studio trickery, "Got to Be a Love" and "Gotta Stand for Something" are straight-ahead funk workouts designed for the dance floor. This is Greyboy's most accessible release to date, proving that a little structure and polish don't need to come at the expense of soul.

great beats with some soul

This album is a great addition for your collection. It has great beats that are easy and relaxing. There will be no need to skip through songs to get to the good ones. The whole album from intro to outro is solid. With rap/hip hop sucking today (you know this genre is pathetic at the present time), it is great to find an artist that has those beats we crave and miss without those lame lyrics claiming how many cars, cash and houses the artist has. This album is a must have. You can't help but feel optimistic and chill when you spin this one.

Good beat and soulful vocals

Got this as a "Song of the Day" from Starbucks. It's a nice, dancy number with some good vocals. With so many artists putting out new music, I'm curious why they're giving us a three year old song? I'd be more interested in what Greyboy is doing now, rather than 3+ years ago. I'd also question placement of this in the "Electronic" genre. This is dance music to me, that comes closer to Electronica or Soul, than to electronic.

Solid

Good beats and multiple vocalists that add variety to the album make this a good listen.

Biography

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '90s, '00s

San Diego producer and DJ Andreas Stevens, or Greyboy, was initially taken by hip-hop but — because he couldn't find any decent MCs to hook up with — shifted his attention to acid jazz. He was, in fact, the very first American producer to do so. And it was an inspired move. In 1994 Stevens served up his debut solo album, Freestylin', with the help of talented sax player Karl Denson. The offering became a cult hit, especially in acid jazz-hungry Europe. Released on the label Ubiquity,...
