Album Review

Not a whole lot has changed in Musiq's world since releasing his second album in 2002 — if this really isn't the case, you wouldn't know it from Soulstar. He's still following in the tradition of his '70s-era idols, he's still taking liberties with the compoundwords for his song titles, and he's still making modern soul that's equally classy and absorbing. Though the steady development of Musiq's songwriting and vocal skills is a major draw as ever, his greatest charm is that he never puts on airs — he never hides behind a persona or affectations, which gives him a sense of intimacy that many of his contemporaries lack. Perhaps that's the greatest lesson he has learned from those who paved the road he rolls down. At just over 70 minutes, Soulstar is another unnecessarily lengthy listen, but there's a great deal of depth beyond the big single picks. Sweet and laid-back from start to finish, the only bona fide boner is a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Miss You," which is detrimental to the album's flow (even if you've never heard the original). Otherwise, this is one of the finest contemporary R&B releases of 2003, with both style and substance in good supply.

Customer Reviews

Thankfully, its here!

I have checked for this album at least 5 times since I bought my iPod and FINALLY it's here! I'm not a huge Neo-Soul fan specifically but Musiq just has that certain something, especially with this album! Had the cd for years, couldnt find it and kept looking for it hoping it'd eventually pop up on iTunes. I am glad to finally be able to purchase it and enjoy it whenever I want.

Best Album Ever!!!

I have been a fan of musiqs' since he has been out loved all of his albums past and present, but this by Far is the Best I can sit down and listen to this album from front to back. He is a great artist and I feel he does not get the respect that he deserves.

It's about damn time

This album is Musiq's greatest effort as an artist. Musiq has a style that works for his voice and I am not a big fan of when he tries to stray from that style. Soulstar provides the Musiq fan with all of that. The collaboration with C-Lo of Gnarles Barkley is one of C-Lo's greatest recordings in my opinion. Buy it now. If you are a fan of Musiq Soulchild and Neosoul, you will not be disappointed.
